Dow City

*Percy and Ralph Dryden of Quick, Ia. are visiting their sisters, Mrs. Gooded.
*As the evenings are long, why not have a lyceum of something of the kind to pass away the time to good advantage.
*Scriver and Co. are building more cribs for corn this winter.
*Mineral Springs Camp 1183 M. W. A. will give a supper and entertainment Tuesday evening Jan. 12. The supper will be from 5 to 8 , in the Old Fellows Hall and the entertainment will be given at Green's Opera House. The supper will be 25 cts each and all who eat supper will be given a reserved seat for the entertainment at the Opera House: there will be no charge made for the entertainment, it will be free. It will consist of some of the secret works of the order, the benefit of woodcraft, and close with a public installation of the new officers. The proceeds of this is for the sick benefit funds all are cordially invited to patronize it.

*We are having fine winter weather.
*Miss Jesse Robertson is sick with malarial fever.
*Miss Zebe Robertson is teaching for her sister who is sick.
*Chas. Brett has moved over near Defiance.
*C. C. Tripp of Arion attended church in Dow City Sunday.
*W. W. Coon of Arion was on our streets last Saturday on business.
*Ira Underhill of Arion was transacting business in Dow City last Tuesday.
*On account of bad roads the M. W. A. postponed their supper and entertainment to some future date.
*We are glad to report that Mrs. Goodell is now recovering and will soon be able to be up.

Married

*Scott-Talcott - At Dow City, Ia., on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1897, Mr. Walter Scott to Miss Minnie A. Talcott, Rev. Whirry of the Baptist church officiating. The bride has been a resident of Dow City and is a lady of very high standing as a truly worthy Christian and most amiable disposition. For a number of years she has been a successful primary teacher in the public schools of Denison and for the past term in the Mason City schools. Mr. Scott is the elder son of Attorney Scott of Sac City, who is well known to many of our citizens and is a young man of estimable character and a good business man. The young people will make their home in Sac City and as personal friends we extend hearty congratulations and good wishes for their future happiness. Mason City Republican

Dow City

*Those who had sleighs enjoyed the snow while it lasted.
*C. O. Miller is on the sick list and is confined to his bed.
*Jess and Zabe Robertson are both sick and at present are no better.
*Grace Wiggins has the grippe and is confined to the house.
*Master Hugh Butterworth is under the doctor's care.
*Dave Huston is reported to be a little better. He is suffering from blood poisoning from having a tooth pulled.
*E. B. Hoeffer has bought the farm of N. R. Wilder southeast of town and will move onto it in the spring.
*A. D. Smith is back again and able to go to work. He went home sick.
*A. H. Rudd, justice of the peace, had his first case yesterday, a suit brought for labor.
*Tramps are not only numerous but they are quite exacting.
*Died Saturday, Jan. 16, Mrs. Hattie Wingrove, wife of Daniel Wingrove and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kepford, age 35. The funeral was from the first Baptist church in Dow City, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. L. Whirry preaching from the text, Rev. 7:17, the latter clause, "And God shall wipe all tears from their eyes." Interment in the Dow City cemetery. A husband and four small children are left to mourn their loss. The two youngest are twins two weeks old.
*Monday evening will long be remembered by Mr. George Rae and about 30 friends who met at his home to celebrate his 57th birthday. Those present were the officers and teachers and members of the Bible Class of the Methodist Sunday school in Dow City. Mr. Rae has lived here for over thirty years and is held in great esteem by all. Last season Mr. Rae built a large addition to his house and the wish of all is that he and his estimable wife may have many years to enjoy their pleasant home.

*Winter struck us in good shape last Friday morning.
*G. W. Hunting is on the sick list. He became sick very suddenly last Wednesday in Wise's hardware store.
*Cora Terry is threatened with typhoid fever.
*A. P. Hardy shipped three carloads of cattle to Chicago Monday.
*Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Hargens a little girl. All doing well.
*Mrs. A. H. Hasper was on the sick list last week but is better now.
*Mrs. Francis ? has cancer of the breast and is not expected to live long.
*Mayor Bonsall is confined to the house by trouble with one of his eyes.
*Born Monday morning, Jan. 25th, a little son to Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Slocumb.
*Mrs. S. E. Dow who has been confined to the house for some time is no better.
*Run over by the cars Monday morning - the mail sack. Damage, a mutilated mail.
*Is it possible that there is a family in town suffering for the want of something to eat, who have to be supplied by friends.

Dow City

*Monday was warm enough to raise a good size blizzard.
*John Hargens and all his family are sick with the grippe.
*Mrs. Bonsall was very ill last week but now is improving.
*E. H. Swasey of Denison was in town last Saturday on business.
*Frank Young was down in this neck of the woods Saturday transacting business.
*W. H. Laub was in Dow City Saturday saying "how de do" to his many friends.
*Ed Riddle was taken with the grippe the other night and is having a serious time with it.
*J. W. Jensen, the blacksmith, has left Dow City and gone to Dunlap to work at his trade.
*Rev. G. L. Goodell was called home to Glenwood Monday morning on the account of his mother being ill.
*Uncle John Baber is confined to the house and some think it will be his last sick spell as he is now over eighty.
*Mrs. J. V. McHenry and Mrs. Frank McHenry are both on the sick list with the grippe.
*H. S. Green and E. N. Chamberlain have rented the Seiver & Co. ice house and will fill it with the clear crystal this week.
*Ahart Bros. have filled their ice house with a nice lot of ice which holds over 100 tons. They will use it in their meat market.
*Thos. Simms, who went to Warren County some time ago to locate, has sent for his family. Their goods were shipped last Saturday.
*A series of revival services will be commenced at the Methodist church next Sunday morning. Rev. C. W. Potter, who was at Denison, will be here to carry on the meetings for a while. Every body invited to attend.
*Charley Jackson who was taken with the grippe over a week ago, is having a hard time of it. He came down one day last week when it was so cold, without over coat or overshoes on and now he suffers ???turn.

*Kent Bros. went out Tuesday to shell corn for Joe Stapaneke.
*The Odd Fellows are talking of building a large hall this spring.
*In three rooms of our school Washington's birthday was observed.
*Charles Jackson has so far recovered from his late illness as to be up.
*Ahart Bros. have sold out their meat market to McDougal & Houston.
*Robt. Riddle and Son are building a house for C. F. Buss west of town.
*Rev. Goodell went to Council Bluffs to attend the missionary convention.
*A. B. Cleasby and Co. have sold out their drug store to Geo. Davis, of Canada.
*The meetings have closed at the Methodist church. Although there were not many conversions they resulted in much good.

*C. J. Terry and family have moved into Nebraska.
*E. B. Wood has moved into the house vacated by Terry.
*Sanford Rudd has moved into the Graham house.
*Gid Hawley of near Defiance was in Dow City Monday.
*We were visited with quite a thunder storm Sunday night.
*G. W. Huntington and son, Harry, were in Dunlap Tuesday on business.
*E. H. Swasey of Denison was in Dow City last Saturday attending to business.
*At the school election last Monday H. Bell and Clara Butterworth were re-elected.
*Dow City will soon have a new millinery store by Mesdames A. H. and D. M. Rudd.
*Rev. G. L. Goodell and wife attended the college debate in Denison last Friday evening.
*Thos. McBride and Grace Wiggins took dinner with the latter's parents in Dow City Monday.
*There will be a missionary convention at the Methodist church next Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon and evening see program in another column.
*Houston and McDougal will take charge of the meat market next Monday. Mr. McDougal our new butcher has moved here from Omaha.

*Mrs. Georgia McCellan of Denison will give her lecture on Gettysburg, Friday evening in Green's hall.
*Mr. Cleasby and family will soon leave Dow City for their future home in Lyons, Iowa, where they have bought out a drug store.
*Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Carr lost their other little one Monday morning. Funeral services from the house Tuesday forenoon.
*Last week was one of the changes, rain, snow, warm weather and a hard freeze up. The river was highest last week than it has been for several years.

*From all appearances we will have a late spring.
*Plenty of mud and high water, part of the mill dam is gone.
*Miss Millie Wiggins went to Mo. Valley last Saturday for a weeks visit among friends.
*A. W. Wiggins and Sam Allen of Denison was down last Wednesday figuring on the new Odd Fellows hall.
*Willis Wiggins has bought the corner lot where he is now located, and will put up a building on the same this fall.
*Two young men from Dow City went to Vail last Wednesday evening, one got a lick in the eye, ten dollars and cost.
*Frank Wetherby of near Buck Grove, who died last week was buried in the Dow City cemetery Saturday afternoon.
*Mr. and Mrs. Cooper of Rolfe, Iowa arrived in Dow City one day last week for a visit with their daughters, Mrs. D. M. Rudd.
*Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Goodell and Miss Millie Wiggins went to Denison last Thursday to attend the Missionary meeting held in the Methodist church.
*Rev. G. L. Goodell went to Neola, Iowa Monday to assist in revival meetings there under the leadership of Rev. C. W. Potter who was lately in Denison and Dow City. Mrs. Goodell left the same day for a visit with her parents at Weston, Iowa.
*At the meeting of the school board last Saturday night they elected the teachers as follows for principal. It took eleven ballots between Mr. Schaeffer of Dow City and Mr. Schofield of Denison, the latter was chosen principal. For the second room there was but one ballot with two candidates, Miss Nellie Scott was re-elected. For the third room it took eight ballots for Mrs. Mary Schaeffer and Miss Jesse Robertson the former was re-elected. For the primary room, Miss Aggie Bell was re-elected.

*A fine rain Monday afternoon.
*It is Scott and Slocumb now in the blacksmith business.
*The Sunday School will hold their Easter service Sunday April 5.
*Ed Pruitt's brother-in-law is here trying to buy out C. C. Booth's dray business.
*A Miss Baker will fill the pulpit at the Methodist church next Sunday (Easter) morning.
*Marion Cole who has had no use of his right arm since he had the typhoid fever a year ago last winter, went to Thursman two weeks ago and last Monday the doctors amputated the arm up near the shoulder. He is getting along very well.

*It didn't rain Easter, but it froze. Wonder if it will freeze for seven Sundays?
*Frank Hooker of Manteno has moved to Dow City in I. H. Scott's house.
*W. W. Brooks has bought the Hoeffer property from N. R. Wilder and has moved into the same.
*Might as well be out of the world as to be out of fashion. Some Dow Cityites saw the airship.
*Mack? Bros. are making up for lost time since the water went down. They are running on full time, turning out number one flour.
*Chas. Cook has moved from Mapleton and will occupy the Wood building as soon as Mr. Wood gets out.
*The photo car left Monday. We did not hear where they went to.
*N. R. Wilder will soon leave Dow City for the far west. We dislike to lose Ned from Dow City.
*W. V. Whaley who was on the sick list last week, is able to be out again.
*Joe McColl has his injured foot done up in a plaster cast and is able to be around on crutches.
*Thos. Rae is hauling the lumber for his new house. The foundation will be done Tuesday, when the carpenters will be ready for their work.
*The Methodist church was well filled last Sunday morning to hear Miss Baker talk on missions and the work of the W. F. M. S.
*Sunday, April 25, the Methodist Sunday school will hold their exercises that were postponed on account of Miss Baker being here on Easter Sunday.
*Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Chamberlin returned home last week from Virginia, Illinois, where they were in attendance at the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Petefish.

*One of the late arrivals - spring. Farmers done seeding, now plowing for corn.
*Marion Cole arrived home Sunday evening. He is getting along nicely.
*The unlucky number of thirteen attended the Odd Fellows anniversary in Council Bluffs Monday.
*About twenty witnesses were in Denison last Friday and Saturday to tell what they knew about the road south of town.
*Judge W. B. Green of Audubon, was in Dow City on business.
*Mr. and Mrs. John Williamson have a nice baby girl that come to gladden their home last Sunday.
*G. W. Huntington received word Monday that his father was sick. He left Tuesday morning for his old home in Ill.
*Miss Anna Rae, who has been in Clinton for the last seven months, returned home Saturday afternoon.
*C. L. Rudd was in Dow City a few days ago. Understand he is out of the paper business, sold out.
*Joe McColl manages to get down to the office by using crutches.

DOW CITY

*Married - at the M. E. parsonage, Wednesday afternoon, May 5, in the presence of a few friends, Geo. W. Binnall of Dow City to Eliza Sayles of Freeport, Mich, Rev. E. E. Ugen Fritz officiating. The many friends of this worthy couple will be glad to read of this event and extend heartiest congratulations. It is understood that they will reside in Missouri where Mr. Binnall has considerable property.
*Obituary - The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Christensen passed away after a brief illness, Sunday, May 9th, 1897, aged three months and ten days. A short service of prayer was held at the residence after which the body was taken to Dow City for burial, the former home of the parents. Rev. Whirry of Dow City conducted the funeral service. Their many friends sympathize with them in the great loss of their little one, and we commend them to God's sustaining in this sore trial.

*Rev. Goodell is off on a vacation to Idaho.
*We were favored with a fine rain Saturday afternoon.
*Ed. Butts was in Denison all of last week and went back this week to help in the office there for awhile.
*Rev. A. A. Hast of Council Bluffs filled the pulpit in the Methodist church last Sunday both morning and evening.
*Mr. Scriver of Denison was in town last Friday looking over the elevator that is being repaired. Just what we need here, a good elevator.
*The third quarterly meeting for the Dow City Charge will be held next Sunday evening and Monday morning May 16 and 17 the presiding Elder will be present.
*There will be an Epworth League sociable next Friday evening, May 14 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Black. All the young folks are invited to attend.

*The Epworth League will entertain the old soldiers and their wives Friday evening. Supper in the League room at 6 o'clock; singing, recitations and an address by Conrade D. Pruitt of Defiance. All old soldiers and their wives are invited to the supper and everybody is invited to the literary part of the programme.
*Work on the elevator is progressing nicely. Every one wants to know f there is to be a damp? When told there is they say "good", no more shoveling grain.
*Sunday, May 30th, memorial services at the Methodist church. Sermon by Rev. J. L. Whirry. Monday the regular services will be carried out in the forenoon at the cemetery and at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at Green's Hall, there will be the usual programme with an address by C. H. McHenry.

HOW TO TREAT A WIFE

First, get a wife; second be patient. You may have great trials and perplexities in your business, but do not, therefore, carry to your home a cloud of contracted brow. Your wife may have trials, which though of less magnitude may be hard for her to bear. A kind word, a tender word, a tender look, will do wonders in chasing from her brow all clouds of gloom. - To this we would add always keep a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy in the house. It is the best, and is sure to be needed sooner or later. You wife will then know that you really care for her, and wish to protect her health.

*July 3rd will be the fourth of July celebration in Dow City.
*Henry Roy has moved into the house north of the M. E. church.
*Chas. Cook has moved into the Hillas house on the east part of town.
*David Houghton? will occupy the Lightner house.
*Miss Ada Balengee is home again from Nebraska.
*Miss Lizzie Rae is home on a few days visit.
*Mrs. Rogers of Nebraska is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rae.
*M. G. Wiggins was out three days last week putting up fence that Scriver and Co. sell.
*Mr. Harrington is repairing his building and when done Cook will occupy it with his restaurant.
*Married: Mr. W. Talcott to Miss Ida Gibson, Rev. Goodell performing the ceremony. A host of friends wish the young couple a happy life. They will live in the McLaughlin house east of town.
*Friday evening about nine o'clock a young man named Warren, who works for Ed Riddle, met with a serious accident from a dynamite cap. He picked it up now knowing what it was and went to picking it with a hairpin, exploding it. The thumb and two front fingers on his left hand were injured, as that a part of each had to be amputated. Dr. Carr performed the operation. The young man is doing as well as could be expected.

Dow City

*D. L. Gillet was in town Tuesday on business.
*As usual Dow City will put up a good celebration on the 3rd.
*Our school board is having the school house repaired and painted.
*R. A. Slocumb returned home from a visit with his parents at Albany, Illinois.
*T. P. Black went to Chicago Tuesday with cattle. He will be gone two or three weeks.
*Last Tuesday as W. C. Peacock and family were coming to town their team ran away throwing them all out but fortunately none were hurt seriously but the buggy looks like it went through a Kansas cyclone.
*Mrs. and Mrs. Wilson Talcott have the assurance that they have a host of friends. The Epworthians to about forty went to their home Monday evening and gave them a surprise. They took with them ice cream and cake and had a fine time. Just before leaving T. P. Black, for the League, presented them with two nice rocking chairs. Mr. and Mrs. Talcott are held in high esteem by all who chance to know them.

Dow City

*Dow City was well represented at the Fowler lecture in Dunlap last Wednesday evening.
*The W. F. M. S. met with Mrs. G. Rae last Thursday afternoon. There was a large attendance and a good time was had.
*Scriver & Co. are sending out a good many McCormick binders this season.
*John Hargen's house is nearing completion. John has built himself a nice home. Riddle Bros. did the carpentering.
*Farmers are cutting their rye. Small grain promises well and corn is looking fine. Potatoes will be a good yield.
*Miss Calla Richards, of Arion was in Dow City Saturday. She and Luelia Crandall took tea with Mrs. R. A. Slocumb.
*J. W. Howorth went to Chicago with two car loads of cattle last Tuesday. He returned Thursday morning.
*Thursday morning we had a hard rain which did considerable damage.
*Scriver & Co.'s elevator is nearly completed. The new 10 horse power gasoline engine is in place and it fills a long felt want in Dow City.
*Mrs. A. W. Wiggins, of Denison, was a Dow City visitor Saturday and Sunday.
*Mr. E. C. McIntosh and children are visiting friends here. They will make their future home in Omaha, Neb.
*Mr. Robt. Riddle, who has been nearly blind for some time with cataract of the eye, went to Carroll recently and had his eye operated upon, can now see enough to be able to get around.
*Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Rudd visited in Omaha Monday.
*Martin and Star Goddard went to Boone the last of the week to visit with relatives.
*Miss Blanche Wise went to Des Moines last week to attend the Musical College for some time. Blanche will teach vocal music in our schools this fall.
*Everett Sweely and a friend of his came from Sioux City on their wheels, visited with friends here, and left Monday morning for Albany, Ill.
*J. W. Wiley of Washington township, was in town Monday on business.
*Fred Timm, who used to live at Bell, was in town shaking hands with his many friends.
*A small boy and match did it. Started a fire behind the old Dow City bank building. It was discovered in time and put out before any damage was done.
*J. W. McAhren and F. J. Young were in town Monday afternoon. Their business called them about four miles south west of town.
*G. W. Langley, who owns a farm 3 miles west of town, brought into town a stalk of corn measuring eight feet four inches in height. Surely prosperity is coming our way.
*Patrick Granger and wife of Paradise were in the city Monday.
*S. J. Woodruff, west of town, is haling the lumber for a large barn.
*Doctor L. M. Coon of Arion was in town Monday. He reports his sister, Mrs. Schouten as resting easy.
*Mildred Wiggins, who was suddenly taken sick Saturday night, is better now.
*J. W. Reynolds and wife left Thursday for Monticello, Ind. where they will visit with friends for about six weeks.
*Mr. Rainwater and wife, of Omaha, came last Saturday to visit with the latter's parents, Mr. T. Leach and wife.
*Miss Allie Sewell of Denison, and Calla Richards visited with Luella Crandall Monday.
*Mrs. Doser and son, Emmet, were in Denison Monday on business. They will move on their farm as soon as J. Hargens gets into his new home.
*A. G. Solomon has sold his barber shop to C. M. Rainwater.

DOW CITY ENTERPRISE

*Last Saturday was a very warm day, but otherwise an ideal day for a celebration. The attendance upon this occasion was below the usual number who come to Dow City to celebrate, and the reason is because nearly every town around us was celebrating at the same time. The small attendance did not hinder the program from being carried out, every one having a good time.
*It is probably now, we think, that Dow City will not celebrate next year, but will assist other towns in making the eagle scream.
*A good many from here are making preparations to hear the lecture in Denison next Wednesday evening by Joseph Smith.
*Henry Bell was a caller Tuesday and informed us that he had fully decided to be a candidate for the office of sheriff of Crawford county. Mr. Bell has spent nearly all his life in Crawford county, and consider that he is not asking for more than he deserves.

*C. E. Booth went to Griswold last Tuesday to visit a college chum.

*Maggie Talcott visited in Denison Wednesday and Thursday of last week.
*Geo. Rae drove to Denison, Monday morning taking Rev. Brown with him.
*Chas. Hammond visited in Charter Oak Wednesday and Thursday of last week.
*Anna Schrempp of Hartington, Nebr. is visiting her friend Mrs. C. W. Carr, this week.
*Mrs. E. H. Swasey and daughter, Helen, visited friends at this place Thursday.
*Paul Poitevin drove to Denison Friday. He was accompanied home by his sister, Grace.
*Mrs. Helsley, of Denison, came down to spend a few days with her mother, Mrs. Bruner.
*George Kraetsch of Des Moines is visiting at the home f Christ Bobzin, south of town.
*Chas. Tabor was down this way Wednesday. It is not very often we see him in Dow City.
*C. O. Miller is enjoying a visit from his brother, H. A. Miller, of Hartington, Nebraska.
*Robert Woodruff, accompanied by his mother and sister, Helen, drove to Denison Saturday.
*Asa and Will Dow were out on the Platte in Nebraska last week looking up a cattle range.
*J. W. Wiley and wife and Miss Green of Arion, drove down Sunday to hear Rev. Brown preach.
*J. W. Reynolds and wife left Thursday for Monticello, Ind. for a two months outing.
*Mary Saunders of Denison was visiting with her cousin Anna Doser last Thursday and Friday.
*Mrs. Tupper and two children of Runningwater, S.D. is here visiting her sister, Mrs. Brinton Sharp.

*G. N. Copeland of Arion, had a tussle at law with W. N. Schouten before G. W. Huntington last Tuesday. Geo. Richardson and E. K. Burch were the attorneys.
*Rev. F. Brown, president of Simpson college at Indiana arrived in Dow City Saturday in the interest of the college.
*When we drive to another town it is rather inconvenient to have to take robe, whip and wraps in our arms wherever we go to keep them from being stolen.
*Gid Hawley, the insurance agent, was in Dow City on business. We can always tell when he is in town without seeing him.
*Dow City has fine a jeweler as any town, a good workman as we had occasion to find out his skill when he assisted us in changing the combination on our safe.
*Rev. Whiting, pastor of the Baptist church, left Wednesday morning for Kansas City, where he will be treated by a specialist for cancer of the throat. May he have a speedy cure and be able to soon resume his labors once more in our midst.
*Rev. F. Brown, of Simpson College, filled the pulpit at the M. E. Church last Sunday both morning and evening. At the close of the morning service the collection for the educational fund was taken and went far above the apportionment.
*George Winterbourne, of Woodbine, gave his lecture on the "White City" at the Methodist church last Wednesday evening. There was a good turnout to hear him and all speak well of him. Truly the "boy orator" will make his mark in the world - now only 16 years of age, and able to hold an audience for an hour.
*Some time during the still hours of night some person or persons burglarized J. Vengrovitch's store. They gained admittance by forcing open the rear door of the ware room , then cutting a hole through the panel of the door into the store room. All they had to do was turn the key and walk in. They secured a number of articles, consisting of shoes, clothing, underwear, hats, suspenders and silk goods. At this time it is hard to tell what all they did take. This is a hard blow on John, as he can ill afford to stand the loss.
*A new summer kitchen is being added to the M. E. parsonage, M. G. Wiggins is doing the work.
*The Epworth League will give a social at the home of Thos. Bruner two miles west of town, Friday evening. Everyone invited to go as they will be sure to have a good time.
*Two lads from Dow City thought it all right to beat the railroad company out of the fare to Omaha, so they jumped into a box car and away they went. But lo and behold it was not very fine sailing for them for at the siding between here and Dunlap there were three other fellows looking for a soft snap, so they took passage in the same car, and being a little short of finance, and the wandering ones from Dow City having a little of what the other three were looking for, were ordered to give it up at the point of a gun. Eight dollars and eight cents was secured, but the three were not satisfied and wanted the boys to give up their coats also. Rather than do this they thought they would make their escape, which they did by jumping off the train while in motion, and luckily without injury. Now boys the next time you want to go to Omaha, get a ticket, and be under the protection of the train hands.

*W. J. Butler of Arion had Peter Sowles arrested for selling liquors contrary to law. He made the counts of it for selling to one who had taken the Kaeley cure; selling to minors and selling on Sunday. The case was brought before Justice Rudd in Dow City. Mr. Sowles took a change and it was sent to Huntington and then Butler took a charge. Finally it was sent to Pett, of Arion, the trial coming off Monday forenoon when the defendant plead guilty to the last charge, selling on Sunday, for which he was fined $10 and costs.
*Scriver & Co. have started their new gasoline engine. It runs to perfection and will handle the machinery of the elevator with ease.
*Joe McColl, our hog buyer, went to Chicago Tuesday morning with stock.

*The Baptist church was well filled last Wednesday evening. Mrs. Ida Crouch Hazlett told how bad women wanted to vote. Mrs. Hazlett is a fine speaker and knows how to act sweet in order that she may make a great impression upon her hearers.
*At the home of T. J. Rule just north of town, there was an exciting time last Wednesday forenoon. Their little girl, scarcely two years old, wandered away from home and got as far west as Bell's place, and when he had taken her home he found that the neighbors had been alarmed and were searching for the lost one.
*Frank Bohart was visible on our streets one day last week.
*Geo. Servoss, of Denison, was smiling on us the last of the week.
*Mr. J. P. Jones, an aspirant for the nomination of county treasurer on the democratic ticket, was in town last week looking after chances.

*Mr. Christensen and wife, of Denison, spent Sunday at this place.

*Blanche Wise had her pupils give a musical recital at her home last Saturday night. Only the parents of the pupils were present. They all did their part well.
*Friday evening, Aug. 13th, will long be remembered by Mrs. W. O. Wood. It was the time when she arrived at the 50th mile post of her life. Her daughter, Mrs. W. V. Butler had her come to their place for supper and to spend the evening. When they got home they found the house filled with friends to the number of fifty or more. It was a complete surprise. A lap lunch of sandwiches, ice cream and cake was served, after which Rev. Goodell on behalf of the friends presented Mrs. Wood with a fine rocker. It was a very pleasant affair and all present enjoyed themselves.
*Mabel Pollock, of near Denison is visiting with Mamie Blackman.
*Mr. W. Frank, who has been visiting with her brothers, the Black boys returned to her home at Blue Island, Ill. last Friday evening. She took little Helen Black with her.

*Rev. Thos. Haver, a returned missionary from India, preached at the M. E. church Sunday evening.
*The party at the home of G. A. Jordan last Friday night was not very well attended but all who went report a very pleasant time.

*Willis Wiggins moved his goods from the corner building last Thursday into the building recently vacated by E. C. Finch. Willis expects to start work on his brick building this week.
*Mrs. Goodell visited at the home of Thos. Rae on Monday.

*Messrs B. F. Bigelow, J. U. Wise and J. N. Bell attended the Odd Fellow's picnic at Council Bluffs.
*We were well pleased to hear of I. M. Shaw's nomination for governor which is equivalent to an election this fall in Iowa.
*T. P. Black was in Denison Monday on business. Some time in the near future we may have something to say.
*Andrew Atwood, who used to live near Charter Oak but now of Independence, Mo. drove up this way and was shaking hands with his friends in town Tuesday morning. He is on his way to Charter Oak.
*Thos. Rae had an exciting experience Tuesday. On his way to town his team took fright at something near the railroad crossing east of town and ran away with him. He held on to the lines and they were stopped in town without doing any damage.
*Rev. Thos. Haven, who was a missionary in India twenty-five years, lectured in Greene's Hall Monday evening on India, it's customs products casts etc. There was a fair turnout to hear him.
*Property is moving in Dow City, on skids and rollers. The old building on the corner south of the drug store is being moved away and there will soon be a brick building in its place.
*Thos. Rae of near Dow City, received a few days ago, a commission from Gov. Drake, to the National Farmers Congress, that meets in St. Paul, Minnesota, Next Tuesday, Aug. 31. It is likely Mr. Rae will go. This is a recognition well bestowed. Mr. Rae is one of Crawford county's most successful farmers.
*H. Vengrovitch is out again. It was hard on him to be shut up under quarantine but it is the proper thing to do.
*Mrs. W. V. Whaley is visiting her brother in Omaha this week. Warren looks so lonesome.
*Long before daylight Tuesday morning, bang, bang, went the gasoline engine down at the elevator, grain is coming in now, as never before for several years. We predict that wheat will go to a dollar a bushel and hogs to $4 a hundred before a month.
*Judge Green of Audubon, is here this week making improvements and doing some painting on his place south of town.

*Mabel Hardy met with a painful accident Sunday morning while coming to town; the horse became frightened and ran away, and in some way the horse kicked her several times, and it is thought one of her ankles was broken.

*Mark Riley, a young man that works for T. G. Bruner, met with a painful accident last Saturday afternoon. He was riding a horse and it fell down with him, dislocating his right wrist. He came to town and had it set.
*The republican caucus for Union township will be held Saturday evening September 10th at eight o'clock in Green's Hall, to select 10 delegates to attend the republican county convention in Denison, Tuesday, Sept. 14, and to attend to any other business that may come up.
*Pickpockets. Beware of pickpockets - to late for that now. Paul Thompson of this city go one hundred and fifty dollars worth of experience last Saturday night on the excursion train from Denison. He took that amount with him to put in one of the banks in Denison. There being such a crowd he did not do it and thought he would bring it back with him and deposit it in the Exchange Bank here. When the train stopped here there was a rush to get off, and that is when the pickpockets got in their work. They also relieved Mr. S. E. Dow of five dollars. They got their work in well for none knew anything about it until the train was gone. State agent Shearman found an empty pocket book on the opposite side of the track Sunday morning.

*Sometime ago there was a paper circulated in Dow City setting forth what the town would do if the L. D. S. would hold their annual conference here in 1898. Last week the conference sent three men here to look over the grounds, they were well pleased with the grounds and it is altogether likely that they will report favorably and Dow City will get the next conference.
*At the republican caucus Saturday evening, S. J. Woodruff, T. P. Black, R. A. Slocumb, C. McHenry, H. Underhill, W. E. Fishel, A. H. Harper, W. C. Rolls, H. Konekamp, Ira Underhill and Will McHenry were chosen as delegates to attend the Crawford county republican convention held in Denison Tuesday.
*Elder Joseph Smith was greeted with a fair sized audience Monday evening at the Methodist church to hear him on temperance; he advance some new ideas; he did not blame the saloon keepers as others do, but came down pretty hard on the man who drinks. He says there is no such a thing as personal liberty. If a man has a horse that has the glanders, can he turn it loose in the public highway or in his neighbor's pasture. I tell you it knocks the personal liberty idea into a cocked hat.

*T. J. Kelly of Denison has rented the Finch building vacated by Willis Wiggins and will start a shoe store in it. Mr. M. Christensen, formerly a resident of this place, will run it for Mr. Kelly.
*An addition to Scriver & Co. advertisement came to late for insertion. They wished to say in relation to their famous Birdsell wagons that a fresh car load is on the way to them as fast as steam can bring them and are expected today, part of which are already sold. Let us sell you one.
*Sunday Mr. Ballengee went out to feed his cow, one of them belonging to Geo. Fritz. He noticed that his cow was sick and in a few minutes she was dead and about this time the other cow was taken sick and he went for help but before any one got there, she too was dead. Veterinary Surgeon Gibson was sent for and he said the cows died from poison but what kind he could not tell. Is it possible there is any one in Dow City so low as that, even if it was done for spite work. It is a poor way to get revenge. If such is the case the outfit ought to be found and dealt with severely.

*Martin Christiansen and wife arrived Thursday from Denison with a line of shoes which they put in the old Finch building. Mr. and Mrs. Christiansen will not go to housekeeping at once but will board a while.
*Thursday morning J. R. Rudd received a telegram stating the Lela Antrim, his granddaughter, living at Gray, Iowa was dead. This will be a shock to many as the little girl was quite well known here. Those from here who went to attend the funeral at Gray were J. R. Rudd, Mr. and Mrs. Clair Butterworth, Mrs. S. C. Rudd and Miss Maggie Rudd.

*Mr. J. S. Dewell, of Mo. Valley, came up to Dow City to see the boys. He is the republican candidate for State Senator and has a good many friends here among democrats who will support him.
*Hon. J. F. Grote, of West Side, and Mr. Blackman of Manilla, were in Dow City last Thursday shaking hands with friends and looking out for votes for Mr. Grote, who is the republican candidate for Representative.
*Mrs. Laura M. Johns of Kansas lectured on Woman Suffrage at the Baptist Church last Monday evening. There was not a very large turnout.

*Walter Cole was just telling us that he commenced to husk corn just four weeks ago and that he worked every day. It is remarkable what weather we have had this fall. The farmers are getting about done with their corn, most of them will finish this week. Corn is good quality and a good many pieces are going 50 bushels to the acre, and it is dry enough to shell.

*B. F. Bigelow has bought Mrs. Doser's property in the west party of town and will move into same as soon as he can get possession of it.
*The home of Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Black was made glad last Wednesday morning, November 17, by the arrival of a little girl of standard weight. All concerned are doing nicely.
*The Teacher's Meeting in Dow City was well attended and one of great interest. Following are the names of those who were present: Misses Craft, Potter, Poitevin, Vertrees, Wiggins, Ada Hallowell, Wilson, Ellen Goddard, Jan Goddard, McKim, Bell, Scott, Talcott, Crandal, Hardy: Mesdames Butler, Schafer, Browne, Heath, Mr. J. News of Dow City

*We now have on hand what we call good winter weather.
*There were a number of trains in town Wednesday night.
*Wm. Rae left Tuesday morning for Pasadena, Calif. He goes there for his health.
*J. W. Wiley of Washington was in town on Wednesday and as noisy as ever.
*L. D. Smith has moved into town from McDougal Bros. place.
*Sheriff-elect Bell has rented his farm to Ed. Brunner and is getting ready to go to Denison the first of the year.
*Black Bros. are now compelled to run the mill by steam. The water in the river is too low.
*Another old landmark gone. The building south of Pruitt's store has been moved away to the east part of town for a dwelling.
*C. U. Rainwater will move his barbershop to the west side of Main street between Kelly, a shoe store and Keith's grocery store.
*The writer's family are under many obligations to Uncle Sol Gibson for a nice turkey for Thanksgiving.

*Miss Nettie Ernst visited friends in Dunlap last Monday afternoon.
*Miss Jeane Humes, of Dunlap, is visiting her aunt, Mrs. C. W. Carr.
*C. D. Cook has moved into the Mike O'Day house west of the school house.
*B. T. Bigelow has bought the Doser property and moved into it.
*The building occupied by Ed. Pruitt has been painted on the outside and it improves it in looks somewhat.
*John Ahart had 2 carloads of cattle on the market Wednesday morning in Chicago with a 25cent drop in the price.
*Mott McHenry thinks he is all right now all on account of that boy. We think he will survive the event.
*E. D. Butts is in Denison this week assisting in the office work there.
*A. H. Rudd has moved the Enterprise outfit into the building where the barbershop was just south of the market.
*Thos. McBride, of Defiance, came over Thursday to take the train for Denison to visit his son, W. H. west of town.
*Postmaster Wiggins has put in a stock of stationery to supply the demand.

*A Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to you all.

*O. B. Cooper of Rolfe, Iowa is visiting his sister, Mrs. D. M. Rudd.
*This township has been thoroughly canvassed in the interest of woman suffrage. Nearly every voter signed the petition.
*S. E. Dow was transacting business in the county seat last Monday.
*Abner Graves came home last Saturday morning. He left the train at Carroll which was wrecked at Vail and says he don't see for the life of him how it happened that there were not a good many of the passengers killed.
*E. H. Swasey who lately moved here from Denison has his office in with Joe McColl.
*It is reported that Dow City will soon have a clothing store in the building just vacated by the Enterprise.
*The churches here will all have Christmas entertainments Friday evening.
*Abner Graves went to Council Bluffs Thursday morning. He will return to spend Christmas before leaving for Denver, Colorado.
*Aunt Nettie Graves slipped and fell last Saturday morning, breaking two or three ribs and hurting her nose badly.
*The little two year old child of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Rudd has been quite sick for a week with the grippe. Jay Bell was again able to come to town Wednesday after a recent illness.
*Prof. J. W. Chapek, of Omaha, is in Dow City for a few days again attending to the wants of those in need of eye glasses.
*Grandma Riley who went to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for a visit in the fall, returned home Thursday forenoon.
*Rev. and Mrs. L. V. Slocumb, of Indianola, will spend the holidays in Dow City visiting their many friends.
*F. R. Schafer who is attending the normal in Woodbine is home for the holidays.
