She was born to Emil and Christine (Bahnsen) Carstensen in Humptrup, Germany on November 9th, 1937. Her first 18 years she resided on the family farm near Aventoft, Germany. Solely on her own, she migrated by ship to New York City in 1955. Soon thereafter, she moved to Sioux City, Iowa where this became her home and she raised her family.

Karin was a faithful servant to the lord through the commitment with the Faith Lutheran Church since inception.

Karin lived her life with unyielding strength, a steadfast spirit, and a heart full of love. Stubborn in the best of ways, she taught us the value of standing firm in our beliefs, facing challenges head-on, and never compromising on what truly matters. Her legacy is one of resilience, and unwavering commitment to her family and values - a testament to a life well-lived.

She was fiercely independent in all her ways which led her to becoming self-employed as a housekeeper, caregiver and landlord.

She was married to Chris Godbersen for twelve years (1959 – 1971) with whom she had three children. She married Sandford Kirkpatrick in 1973 until he passed in 1985. Through this marriage she gained two additional children.

She is survived by her son, Martin Godbersen of Sioux City and daughter, Melinda (John) Herbst of Harrisburg, SD, and step-son, Daniel Kirkpatrick of Hawaii. A legacy of many grandchildren, Lisa (Josh) Hollowell of Sgt. Bluff, IA, Candace (Nic) Leff of Sioux City, Travis (Ashley) Godbersen of Spokane, WA, Tina (Rob)Davis of Jordan, MN and Rachel Godbersen (Terry Jones) of South Sioux City, NE, Katrina (Robert) Hostetler of Bentonville, AR, Nathan Flanders of Sioux Falls, SD, Abby Flanders of Woodbridge, VA and Allie (Brett) Moses of New Paris, PA.
