Scott Matthew Smith

October 23, 1959 - December 7, 2024

Scott Matthew Smith, 65, of Golden, CO (formerly of Sioux City, IA) died at his home on December 7, 2024 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Scott was born in Sioux City, IA in 1959 to Scott and Mary Jo (McDonald) Smith. He was a Bishop Heelan Catholic High School graduate. He then earned a degree in business administration from the University of Iowa. After a sales career, Scott returned to school mid-life earning a bachelor of science in nursing from Morningside University and a master of science degree in nursing from Briar Cliff University. He worked as a hospice nurse and psychiatric nurse practitioner for the remainder of his career.

Everyone who knew Scott knew how much he loved bicycling, swimming, skiing and hunting. Scott loved University of Iowa sports and was a diehard Hawkeye football fan. He was also a University of South Dakota Coyotes fan and often returned to the area to watch the Coyotes play. Scott was a true audiophile; he enjoyed music and was a talented, amateur singer. In fact, when Scott visited his patients, he would often sing to them. He loved concerts and regularly attended Saturday in the Park in Sioux City.

Scott was also the unofficial family historian. With an almost photographic memory, Scott could recall almost every detail of early family life. He enjoyed growing up in Sioux City, returning often, and kept in touch with many of his Siouxland friends.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Jo Smith; brothers Brian Smith of Silverthorne, CO and Patrick (Suzanne) Smith of Lake Barrington, IL; sisters Keley (Gary) Smith-Keller of Yankton SD and Molly Smith (Steve Ipswitch) of Lead SD; special friend Diane Nores Satter of Mandeville, LA; five nieces and nephews, Garrett Smith Keller (Taylor); Natalie Smith, Hannah Smith, Rachel Smith and Dylan Smith; and several cousins.

Scott was preceded in death by his father, Scott Julius Smith.

Scott's family thanks his many friends who offered support and care during his illness. A special thanks also goes to Mount Evans Home Healthcare and Hospice of Evergreen CO. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
