A Horrible Accident.

The people of Giard and vicinity were horribly shocked Monday by the news that Ray Bickel was seriously injured by his traction engine. Mr. Bickel was engaged in hulling clover and Monday noon moved to the Geo. Heilmann farm to do some hulling for him. Ray lined up his engine with the huller and then went to dinner. He neglected to release the clutch from the fly wheel and also failed to close the throttle In putting the belt on the drive pulley turning the engine, it turned over center thus starting the engine, and Mr. Bickel was drawn between the engine and fly wheel and was so badly crushed that he died a few hours afterwards.

W. H. Haefner and family was called to Giard last week to attend the funeral of Mrs. Haefner’s brother, Ray Bickel who was killed by being caught in a threshing machine engine.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Dec. 21, 1878 and died Nov. 2, 1914. He is buried in the Giard Cemetery in Farmersburg, IA.
