Ed McCall, 93, passed away Friday, October 5, 2012, at Kavanagh House Hospice in Des Moines.
He was born December 14, 1918, in Brookings, South Dakota, to Frank McCall and Harriet Wells McCall. Ed graduated from AIB in accounting after graduating from Dexter Iowa High School. He lived and farmed in the area many years. He also lived on a farm near Guthrie Center, in Des Moines, in Indianola and on a farm near Palmyra, Iowa. For 20 years, he was Director of the Withholding Department at the Iowa State Tax Commission.
Ed will be remembered as an outstanding musician, having played with numerous bands and musicians around central Iowa. His favorite music was old Appalachian fiddle music. He composed over 80 songs, and was a member of the Central Iowa Fiddlers Club. He has also written many "yarns" in his later years. He had many talents and hobbies, and enjoyed "fixin" things.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; children, Alice Bolton of rural Palmyra, Dennis (Robin) of Sturgis, Michigan, "Ginny" Virginia (Jerry) Nelson of Des Moines, and Jean (Gary) Hansen of Tucson, Arizona; step-children, Elaine Szalay of Elkton, Maryland, Dr. Richard Ripperger of Davenport, and Scott (Jill) Ripperger of Ames; one brother, Dr. "Jack" John McCall of Edwardsville, Illinois; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Marie Shelley McCall; also his parents; sister, Marian Kleckley; brothers, "Billy" Willard and "Tom" Thomas McCall; and grandson, Daniel McCall.
As per Ed's wishes, there will be no funeral services. Private burial of his cremains will be at a later date at Morrisburg Cemetery, north of Stuart, Iowa.
Memorial contributions may be made to Kavanagh House on 56th Street, Des Moines, or a charity of your choice in loving memory of Ed.
