DENNIS G EMANUEL, M D- A comparatively recent addition to the medical coterie of Ottumwa, Dr Dennis G Emanuel has made himself popular both in the medical fraternity and civic circles by his association with local affairs and organizations, and his readiness to co-operate with movements and groups having the best interests of the community at heart. He was delayed in entering upon a civilian practice of medicine and surgery by reason of joining the Armed Forces of the United states during World War II, almost immediately after completing his formal and technical education and hospital internship,
Dr Emanuel was born at Muscatine, Iowa, on October 31, 1913, son of George and Theresa (Klodt) Emanuel, now residents of Iowa City, his mother a native of Milton. His father, born in Floris, was an engineer connected with the Rock Island Railroad. Reared at Iowa City, Dr Emanuel was graduated from the local high school, class of 1934, and matriculated at the University of Notre Dame, where he received the Bachelor of Science degree in 1938. For his professional studies he attented the University of Iowa, where in 1942 he became a Doctor of Medicine. Dr Emanuel was an intern at St Mary’s Hospital, Duluth, Minnesota, until July, 1943, when he entered the United States Army with the rank of first lieutenant, later receiving a commission as Captain. He served overseas for 18 months in Italy as battalion surgeon. Receiving his honorable discharge from the service in November, 1945, he pursued postgraduate work at the University of Iowa, and inaugurated a practice as a physician and surgeon in Ottumwa in September, 1946. His professional activities have been of a character that have gained him distinction in the city, and with colleagues.
Dr Emanuel is a city physician of Ottumwa, and a member of the Wapello County Medical Society, the Iowa State Medical Association, and the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons. Fraternally he is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and he is a member of the Kiwanis Club, and the Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce. He is a communicant of St Mary’s Catholic Church.
On June 24, 1942, Dr Dennis G Emanuel married Mary Coughlin, daughter of John And Ellen (Burns) Coughlin, both of whom were born in Ottumwa, her father a railroad man associated with the Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul and Pacific Railway. Mrs Emanuel is actively interested in the Service League and the Medical Auxiliary of Wapello County. Dr and Mrs Emanuel are the parents of 4 children; 1) Ann, born July 6, 1943. 2) Dennis William, born July 12, 1946. 3) Janie, born September 1, 1947. 4) John Francis, born September 12, 1949.
