VACTOR PRATT~A successful agriculturist of Highland Tpwnship; was born in Boone County Ky., in 1817, and is the son of Artemus and Nancy Parker Pratt, natives respectively of New York and Virginia, the former being of Scotch-Irish decent and the later descended from the English.
The subject of our history removed with his parents from his native State of Indiana, where he lived until 1871. He then crossed the Mississippi and coming into Wapello County, settled in Highland Twp, which has been his home since that time.
He was married in 1843, to Miss Valeria Baldwin, a native of Indiana and the daughter of David baldwin who, by her union with our subject, became the mother of seven children; briefly recorded s follows: Oliver C. served in the Union Army a few months and died in 1871 at the age of twenty-four years; Lydia A. is the wife of J.M. Elder, of Highland Township; George R., of Creston, Iowa, and is engaged in railroading; Albert is a cattle breeder of Montana; Alice; a twin died in 1882 at the age of twenty-seven years; Rebecca J. is the wife of Newton Baker, of Competine Township; Henry H. is at home.
The father of our subject died when the latter was an infant of thirteen months old; his mother survived her husband by nearly sixteen years.
Mr. Pratt learned the trade as stone-cutter at Greensburg, Ind., and until the time of coming to Iowa. He is an energizing and enterprising citizen, the friend of morality and sobriaty, and takes an intelligent interest in everything pertaining to the welfare of his county and community. Politically he is a Republican and uniformly votes support of th eprinciples of his party.
