Dr. Jerry JUSTEN passed away peacefully on April 17, 2011 in his own home. He was born on June 10, 1918 to loving parents, Juliet and Bernard JUSTEN in McHenry, Illinois.
Dr. JUSTEN was a prominent Obstetrician and Gynecologist. After completing his residency in OBGYN (at Kaiser Hollywood where he was chief resident), he moved to Santa Maria, California in 1958 and practiced medicine for 44 years before retiring in June 2002. During that time, he served as Chief of OBGYN at both Marian and Valley hospitals. During his career, he delivered more than 9,000 babies.
Dr. JUSTEN was a graduate of Lake Forest University and Chicago Medical College. He did his internship at Cook County General Hospital. As an intern, he made the amazing sum of $50 per month for 60-80 hour work weeks. In order to help support his wife and three sons, he and several other interns and residents sold used cars at a lot they jointly owned in order to earn more money.
Dr. JUSTEN served in the Korean War as a battalion surgeon in Austria. He coached the base football team, which won the 1954 U.S. Army European championship. He was a member of the Santa Maria Elks Lodge since 1970.
Dr. JUSTEN was father to Patrick Jerome, James Paul, and John Bernard Justen, and grandfather to Chris Justen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Juliet and Bernard, his wife Mary Margaret [(WARD), formerly of Maloy, Iowa] JUSTEN, his older sister Gertrude, and his youngest son John.
He is survived by Patrick, Chris, James and his wife Dorothy, and his brother Paul and sister Bernice.
To celebrate his life, a Visitation will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, April 21, 2011 with a Scripture service following at 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home.
