OBITUARY ~ JEAN BERNICE (YEAROUS) McELHINEY
Jean Bernice YEAROUS McELHINEY, age 83, of Yorktown, Iowa, died Saturday, September 10, 2005, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 13, 2005, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Walden PAIGE officiating. Visitation with the family will be 7-8 p.m., Monday, September 12, 2005 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Summit Cemetery, rural Yorktown, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to World War II Veterans Memorial. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Jean Bernice McELHINEY was born July 8, 1922, on the family farm rural Yorktown, Iowa, to Nathan "Ted" YEAROUS and Hallean (ELLIS) YEAROUS. Jean was a graduate of Yorktown High School and attended a business college in Denver, Colorado. On March 24, 1945, she was united in marriage to Marvin "Mac" McELHINEY at New Orleans, Louisiana. While growing up in Yorktown, Jean enjoyed playing softball and basketball. Jean had many activities and interests. She was a Camp Fire Girls leader, Yorktown City Council member, and also was chairman of the Yorktown Centennial in 1985. She enjoyed researching local history, bowling, doing crossword puzzles, watching the Clarinda High School Band perform, reading, movies, music and soap operas. Jean enjoyed life and was quite a prankster.
Preceding Jean in death were her parents and husband.
Survivors include her daughters, Maureen SMITH of Rogers, Arkansas; Aileen OLENIUS and husband Vic of Victoria, Texas; grandchildren, Tanya JONES of Rogers, Arkansas, Terry SMITH of Las Vegas, Nevada, Lance OLENIUS and wife Kristi of Houston, Texas, Layna OLENIUS of Houston, Texas; great-grandchildren, Lynzey JONES, Ashley JONES, Brooke OLENIUS; sister, Evelyn LARSON and husband Glenn of Denver, Colorado; sister, Laura CAZEE and husband Clarence of Tombstone, Arizona; sister-in-law, Nina POTTS of Hopkins, Missouri; sister-in-law, Helen MENDENHALL of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; nieces and nephews.
