Madrid, IowaPaul J. Somsky, 84, of Des Moines, formerly of Granger, IA and Omaha, NE, passed from this life on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at Senior Suites of Urbandale. In agreement with Paul's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date at Beaver Catholic Cemetery, in rural Granger.
Paul was born on March 31, 1929, in Granger, Iowa, to Thomas and Anna Samansky Somsky. He was a graduate of Creighton University earning his bachelor's degree and Doctor of Medicine degree. Paul had served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, until he was honorably discharged as Corporal in 1954.
For many years, he was employed as a physician of internal medicine at a private practice in Omaha. Paul was also the Medical Director of Employees Heath Services and Occupational Health Services both at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha. He was a mentor to many grad school students. Paul taught G.E.D. classes at Open Door Mission in Omaha and English as a second language to immigrants to America. In the early 1960s, Paul had joined the Peace Corps. He traveled to Dessie, Ethiopia, Africa, where he had volunteered countless hours at the ASFA Wossen Hospital, before becoming a staff physician and then the Medical Director.
He was a lifetime member of the American College of Physicians and the Nebraska Medical Society; and a member of the American Society of Internal Medicine, V.F.W. and American Legion. In 2009, Paul moved back to Des Moines. He enjoyed time with his family, friends and traveling. Paul will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his sister, Dorothy Meng of Urbandale; and several nieces and nephews including Patty Bittner and her husband, Kevin Heinzeroth of Waukee. Paul was preceded into eternal life by his parents; five brothers, George, Tom, Joseph, Albert and John Somsky; and four sisters, Marguerite Johnson, Anna Kristoff, and Catherine and Agnes Somsky.
Paul had a special love for all plants and listening to classical music. The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made in Paul Somsky's name to either the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden at 909 Robert D. Ray Drive, Des Moines, IA 50316; or Iowa Public Radio at 2111 Grand Avenue, Suite 100, Des Moines, IA 50312.
