Carter Douglas Halverson, age 18, of Paullina, IA, passed away unexpectedly on December 21, 2024. Carter was born on October 30, 2006, in Cherokee, IA, to Bryan and Tisha (Templer) Halverson. Carter was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Sutherland, IA, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina where he was confirmed.

Carter was currently attending South O’Brien High School, as a senior. He excelled at academics even without putting in all the work his mom thought he should. He was always on the Honor Roll and earned Academic All-Conference in football this fall.

Carter was actively involved in football, golf, and baseball, and in his younger years, he participated in tumbling, track, and basketball. Despite breaking his thumb/hand three different times this fall; he wouldn’t miss playing on Friday night with his boys. With the end of football season, Carter was eagerly awaiting golf season and was hoping to consistently shoot better than his dad. Carter also loved leading the South O’Brien student cheer section and dressing up for every theme night.

During his high school years, Carter enjoyed being involved with the SO’ Yearbook and Publications Class. He was currently serving as the business manager for the yearbook and also served on the yearbook sports team. In Publications, he worked on the school newspaper, created the Wolverine Weekly slideshow, and prepared the ads and designs that were featured on the new scoreboards during games.

During the summers, Carter built his own mowing business. This past summer, he decided to join the full-time workforce and started working construction for B & J Builders in Primghar, IA. He enjoyed working with the guys, sharing lots of laughs, and learning many new skills. While working at B & J, Carter acquired the nickname King Kong, which quickly became a favorite among his friends.

Carter planned to attend the University of Iowa after graduation as he was a lifelong Hawkeyes fan and loved attending football games at Kinnick Stadium. In his early years, he was sure that he and Derek were going to play on the same NFL team together. After some extensive discussions on the reality of even one of them playing in the NFL, let alone two SO’ graduates playing on the same NFL team, he had tempered his goals and planned to study business.

Carter could light up any room with his infectious smile and big brown eyes. He was genuinely kind and truly cared about others, becoming friends with almost anyone. He wanted people to feel welcome and included. Although his time on earth was much too short, he used his 18 years well, and the impact he left was beyond words.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Bryan and Tisha Halverson, siblings, Avery and Brecken Halverson of Paullina, IA; grandparents, Dennis and Laura Templer of Sutherland, IA, and Doug and Pam Halverson of Peterson, IA; great grandmas, Joyce Craig of Paullina, IA, and Phyllis Jones of Primghar, IA; aunts and uncles, Brian and Leah Templer of Sutherland, IA, Samantha and Curt Steiner of Spencer, IA, and Renee and Tom Weber of Peterson, IA. He was also survived by his cousins as well as many extended family members and friends. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends and the South O’Brien community.

Following the graveside services there will be a time to celebrate Carter’s life at the Paullina American Legion. The family invites you to share your favorite memories of Carter so everyone can cherish the impact he had on those who were blessed to know him.
