Michael “Mike” William McAndrews, 76, of Blencoe, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2024, at his residence.
A funeral mass will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, May 20, 2024, at St. John Catholic Church, 1009 13th Street, Onawa, Iowa, with Father Michael Erpelding, celebrant, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website Mike’s obituary. The family requests all those attending to wear casual attire. Burial will follow in the Graceland Cemetery, Blencoe, Iowa, with Military Honors provided by the United States Army and the David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa, Iowa. A visitation will be 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the Goslar Funeral Home Chapel, 1629 10th Street, Onawa, Iowa, with a scriptural wake service at 7:00 P.M. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
Michael William was born on July 1, 1947, the son of Philip and Pauline (Gaul) McAndrews on the farm in Defiance, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. Mike attended school in Defiance, Mapleton, and graduated from Charter Oak-Ute in 1966.
On October 28, 1967, he married Christine Jepsen. To this union they had two daughters, Karen and Julie.
Mike enlisted in the National Guard. He served with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam from 1968-1969. Mike received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and several other medals.
He worked for Leo Stanislav for forty-three years on the farm. Mike was a very loyal employee.
Mike enjoyed reading, antiquing, and collecting many items. He loved traveling to see his family and enjoyed his time with his nieces and nephews. If you were a friend of Mike’s, you were a friend for life.
He was a prior member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Chris McAndrews of Blencoe, Iowa; two daughters, Karen (Tony) Betjacob of Omaha, Nebraska, and Julie Thompson of Fremont, Nebraska; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Thompson of Minot Air Force Base of Minot, North Dakota; five brothers, Joe (Pam) McAndrews of Onawa, Iowa, Patrick (Judy) McAndrews of Sioux City, Iowa, Steve (Patti) McAndrews of Stuart, Iowa, Frank (Denise) McAndrews of Ute, Iowa, and Don McAndrews of Logan, Iowa; three sisters, Kate (Dale) Bielenberg of Norwalk, Iowa, Laura (Rich) Parker of Monroe, Iowa, and Paula (Rick) Esser of Denison, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Pauline (Gaul) McAndrews; brother, Tom McAndrews, and niece Kimberly Kay McAndrews.
