Bert Alvin Fender, 8l, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away peacefully with family around him on May 8, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.
A private family graveside memorial service will be held at a later date in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa with Military Honors provided by the United States Air Force and the David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa, Iowa. Sorry Dad a cheap pine box in the backyard isn’t legal in Iowa! Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
Bert Alvin was born November 23, 1942, in Onawa, Iowa, to Lesslie and Henrietta (Norhrnberg) Fender. He attended Onawa Community School. Bert enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1961 and was honorably discharged in 1965. He was a Vietnam Veteran.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Golden, on July 12, 1964, at the United Methodist Church in Onawa, Iowa.
He was a member of Jaycees, American Legion Post #129, and served his community as a Monona County Reserve Deputy Sheriff for many years.
Bert was a meat cutter at Safeway, Moore Brothers, and Onawa Foods! Where he took pride in talking with his customers, sharing cooking tips, and recipes and always had candy for the kids! He later switched careers and worked at Gerkin Windows & Doors until he retired.
After retiring he had more time for his gardening, fishing, and hunting. He enjoyed playing cards, baking homemade pies with his fruit and vegetables from his garden. On Sundays he would listen to his 50’s record collection while he cooked breakfast. He was thrilled to tease and spend time with his nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He enjoyed barbecuing on his old charcoal grill until it fell apart… he hated the new one mom got!
He is survived by Thomas and Ellen (Davis) Fender of Medical Lake, Washington, and Loren and Sandy (Raymond) Fender of Onawa, Iowa; five grandchildren, Preston and LLythellen (Fender) Jackson of Wallace, Idaho, Heath Puterbaugh and Wife Cia Fender of Mitchellville, Iowa, Jon and Lucinda (Fender) Roach of Onawa, Iowa, Mark and Kayla (Fender) Stockton of LeMars, Iowa, and Alexandria "Lulu" Fender of Onawa, Iowa; ten great-grandchildren, Madison Roach, Keira Kono, Jordan Roach, Jasmine “Turbo” Fryer, McKenzie “Nitro” Jackson, Bronc Stockton, Brenliegh Stockton, Breckin McKnight, Bristol Stockton and Braelyn Stockton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dean and Carol Delashmutt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Ted and Sherry Golden of Blencoe, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Fender; parents, Lesslie and Henrietta (Nohrnberg) Fender; brothers Lyle, Roy, and Dale Fender; grandson LLythaniele “Sporto” Fender; parent-in-laws, Maurice and Lauretta Golden; brother and sisters-in-law, Maurice and Shirley Golden, and Nancy Foster; and nephews, Eddie Foster and Jeff Foster.
