Dr. Gowdy is actively engaged in the practice of medicine in Henderson and is specializing in the treatment of diseases of the stomach, for which branch of professional work he has fully qualified. A native of New York, he was taken by his parents to Chicago when but two years of age. He pursued his education in the schools of Waukegan, Illinois, and finished his sophomore year at Hillsdale College in southern Michigan. He then attended two years at the Northwestern University medical school, after which he entered the Detroit Medical College, from which he was graduated with the class of 1871. He then located for practice in Genesco, Kansas, where he remained for more than a quarter of a century, or until 1897, when he removed to Hopeville, Iowa, where he followed his profession until 1901. In that year he went to Henderson, Iowa, where he has since lived. He has pursued post-graduate work in the Chicago Post Graduate School on diseases of the stomach and in his practice makes a specialty of that branch. He has performed notable cures along that line, showing that his knowledge is comprehensive and accurate, and he is seldom, if ever, at fault in the application of scientific principles to the needs of suffering humanity. He is very conscientious in the performance of his professional duties and adheres closely to a high standard of professional ethics.
Aside from his practice Dr. Gowdy is well known as a valued and representative resident of Henderson and his fitness for leadership, combined with his public spirit, has led to his selection for a number of local offices. He served as city clerk for seven years and likewise filled that position when at Hopeville, Iowa. He votes with the republican party and is interested in all that pertains to general progress and improvement, but after all regards the practice of medicine as his real life work. He is a member of the Mills County Medical Society and has the high regard and friendship of his professional brethren in the county.
