$300,000 FIRE AT MARSHALLTOWN –
HALF OF THE CITY IN RUIN

A Marshalltown special says the most destructive fire that ever occurred in Central Iowa took place today. It commenced in Stanley’s elevator, and quickly communicated to adjoining buildings, and, fanned by a high wind, it at one time threatened the whole town the whole southeast part of the city is in ruins. The loss foots up about $300,000. Five elevators with a vast amount of grain in store, a woolen mill, two hotels, four lumber yards, the Northwestern depot, tanks and pump building, five stores and shops, and three dwelling houses were consumed. Cedar Rapids, Grinnell and Des Moines were telegraphed for aid, and promptly responded, but only the Grinnell Company arrived, the flames having been subdued and the others ordered back.
