This is one of several letters to James Smith and his wife Rebecca "Jane" Mathew Smith. James moved from Fountain Co., IN to Marion Co., IA in 1854. On 4 Jul 1854 James married Jane, who was a daughter of John Mathew and Lucinda Moorman or Morman Mathew. The Mathews had moved to Marion Co. from Ohio.
Pigeon roost January the 10th 1870
dear brother and sister we are all well hoping these few lines may find you well we received your leter new years day the package of papers come the sam[e] day the other pack that you sent in the male never come the little paper of the valy come about two thirds of the time for about three months I was very glad to get them all even old brick for I hadent seen one of them for a year if you send any more role another brick with them I only take one and am a great hand to read We went hunting this fall had very bad wether and worse roads we were gon[e] 15 day killed 2 deer one of them a b [probably buck]. we folowed at least 50 miles that we made it deer meat instead of venison ther was a big crismas here for wolfs and everybody come to the amount of 100 men and something near 50 houns they hunted around till about noon and started a deer and nearly all the hounds went after it and caught it about dark on South river [end of page 1] we took the balance of the houns and starten a pos[s]e and soon caught it and took it out east of dalas [Dallas] and burned it out and you bet we had fun So the wolf hunt is not over yet they are waiting on the wether
The folks is all well so far as I know my ink is very poor and it is night you must excuse this short Epistle if it doze [does] ______ mostly on hunting I will promise to doo better next time Sal[l]ly Mathew was here the other day let us hear from you as soon as you have time for we dont get any leter from any body else and it is a good deal of pleasure to hear from you if you are a long way off. So no more at this time but will close
