September 14, 1965 - December 24, 2024

Jon Otto, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at his Winterset, Iowa home on December 24, 2024, at the age of 59. Jon lived life on his own terms, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he encountered with his stubborn spirit, captivating stories, and generous heart.

Born on September 14, 1965, in Des Moines, Iowa, Jon spent much of his childhood between Iowa and Colorado, which sparked his lifelong love for the mountains. In March of 1991, he started dating the love of his life, Darice, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Their bond was immediate, and six months later, on September 16, 1991, they married. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and four wonderful children.

He spent many years behind the wheel of a semi driving across the country and forging friendships with fellow truckers along the way. He took great pride in the freedom of the open road. Also running his own painting business, Jon earned a reputation for his meticulous work and dedication to the craft. Jon's true passions, however, extended beyond his work. His love for Harley-Davidson motorcycles was legendary—there was nothing like the thrill of a ride with nothing but the wind in his hair and the open road ahead. He was an avid fisherman, spending countless hours casting a line in hopes of a big catch, but more often simply enjoying the peace of the water. His humor was unmistakable—often telling jokes that were just a little inappropriate, but always guaranteed to bring a smile.

What truly set Jon apart, however, was his selfless and giving nature. With a heart as big as the open road, he was always ready to lend a hand or offer support to anyone in need—even when he didn't have much to give. His generosity and selflessness left a lasting impact on all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.

Jon’s 13 grandkids were his pride and joy. They knew all too well that they’d better not pull Papa’s finger, but the warmth and love he shared with them will live on in their memories forever.

Jon is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Darice Otto, of Winterset, Iowa; children Brandon (Alissa) Otto of Indianola, Iowa, Grace (Scott) Chaney of Indianola, Iowa, Lillian (Nick) Haworth of Des Moines, Iowa and Ryne Davis of Winterset, Iowa; sister Tracy Gilmore of Truro, Iowa; nephew, Dustin (Kasy) Gilmore; and his 13 grandchildren. He was greeted in heaven by his beloved daughter, Roseanna Otto; parents, Connie and Dennis Otto; grandparents, Harold and Eva Hughes; son-in-law, Levi Steil; and his cherished fur babies, Pookie and Spunky.

Jon’s memory will live on through his family, his humor, and the kindness he showed to all. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

A Celebration of Life Gathering to remember Jon’s life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Those in attendance are requested to wear your Harley Gear. In lieu of flowers donations are requested to be given to the family.
