January 1, 1876RESOLUTIONS OF TEACHERS NORMAL INSTITUTE -- UNANIMOUSLY AND EARNESTLY
ADOPTED AT ITS LATE SESSION IN CHARITON.---------------------------------
Chariton, Aug. 27th, 1875.
1. Resolved, That we, the teachers of Lucas county, being so largely
represented at this meeting, tender to the State Legislature our hearty
thanks for inaugurating the present system of Normal Institutes, it being
far in advance of the previous plan, giving time for extensive review and
practical instruction. Our only regret being that the patrons of our
schools failed to manifest (by their attendance) that interest which we had
anticipated.2. Resolved, That the school board, and trustees of the M.E. Church of
Chariton, have our earnest thanks for allowing us the use of their
respective buildings without charge, thereby saving an additional expense.3. Resolved, That we, as members of this institute, are decidedly opposed to
any law having for its object the exclusion of the bible from the public
schools, believing the laws of our Divine Teacher, as expressed in his
written word, necessary to the moral education of our youth.4. Resolved, That the (can't read) of this institute be tendered to Prof. W
G. Mason and Miss Francis Thomison, of the Missouri State Normal School, at
Kirksville, for the very earnest and faithful manner in which they have
performed their duties as instructors, and that in returning to their homes
they carry with them the respect and esteem of the entire attendance, and
that we shall deem it a very great pleasure as well as a benefit to have
their assistance at our next Normal Institute.5. Resolved, That in the person of J.J. Allen, our County Superintendent, we
recognize an earnest and efficient officer, one who has the cause of popular
education at heart, and who, by his untiring efforts for our advancement, in
procuring able, practical instructors, and otherwise, and for his wise
policy and devotion to the cause of education during his entire term of
office, merits the highest approval of our citizens, and has the sincere
thanks of every true teacher, and that we shall be most happy to have his
advice and assistance at any time.6. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be presented to the Chariton
Patriot and Leader, also to the Kirksville (Mo.) Educational Journal, for
publication.J.D. Miller
