FRED GUSTAF ANDERSON

Fred Gustaf Anderson was born in Chariton, Iowa, and spent his life in Lucas County. His mother, Gustava Anderson (maiden name, also) and his father, Andrew Gustaf of Bogaboo Town, Sweden came to America in 1868 and settled in rural Lucas County. Gustaf paid someone else to take his place in the Standing Army of Sweden.

Fred was the fourth child born to the family of fourteen children, only six of whom survived past infancy. Anna, who was born in Sweden, was the first, and the others were born in America. Clara Carlson, Hattie Marie (Mary) Hall, Carl and Clarence Martin Anderson. Fred was born February 2,1876.

Fred worked as an apprentice carpenter for John Lyons and learned the trade. Many of the homes in Lucas County were erected and finished within by him.

In 1901, Fred married Minnie Muriel Martin, daughter of Thomas Henry Martin (who was the lad who caught the horse thief who shot and killed sheriff Lyman). She was the granddaughter of Samuel Prellaman Martin, in whose home the First Baptist Church of Chariton was organized in what was then a county community, Freedom by name, and later called Ragtown, located about six miles southeast of Chariton.

Minnie Muriel (Merle as many called her), was the third of six children born to Thomas Henry and Nancy Jane Murphy Martin. She was born February 18, 1879, and spent her entire life in Lucas County.

To this union were born nine children; Lois, Martha Irene, Agatha Estalene, Nancy Gustava, Thomas Mahlon, Gerald Martin, Leonard Raymond, Glen Leo and Dorothy Pauline.

Lois married Frank Ambelang and they were the parents of Muriel Darlene and John Frederick. The Ambelangs established and cared for a greenhouse in Chariton for twenty-seven years.

Darlene became the bride of Edward Steinbach, (now Creston's Clock Man) and were the parents of Frankie Ann, (Mrs. Joe Hauptman), Josephine Marie (Mrs. Nick Dixon), Freida Mae (Mrs. Bob Berning), Martha Pauline, Marguerite Muriel (Mrs. Roger Graeve), Catherine Veronica (Mrs. Bill Sackley), Daniel George and David Arthur, who were twins, and Mary Virginia (Ginger).

Charles Frederick and Julie Ann were children of John Frederick and Ella (Susie) Huddnell.

Martha Irene was an elementary teacher for forty-six years, including eight years in rural Lucas County and thirty-five years in Chariton.

Alva Glenn, Jr. is the son of Agatha Estalene and Alva Glenn, Sr.

Nancy and Roscoe Rose's children were Nancy Jane, James Allen, Betty Erlene, (Mrs. Tom Bigelbach), and David Lee.

Thomas and Merle Schonenberger adopted a brother and sister, Donald Arthur and Arla (Mrs. Neal Lawson).

Gerald Martin Anderson is an electrician, retired and living in Pollock Pines, California.

Leonard Raymond and Darlene Russell Anderson are parents of Robert Raymond and John Russell.

Glenn Leo and Marian Smith became the parents of two adopted children, Gary Lee and Teri Jo (Mrs. Dennis Egts).

Dorothy and Carl are the parents of John Edward, Mary Jo (Mrs. Scott Mills), and twins, Tom Ray and Susan Kay.

The great grandchildren of Fred and Muriel include Kristin and Julie children of Frankie and Joe Hauptman: Damien, Megan, Dominic, Jason and Dion, children of Josephine and Nick Dixon.

Barbara, Gregory, Amanda, Nathan, Tabbie, and Melinda are the children of Freida and Bob Berning. Chad, Valerie, and Duane are the children of Margurite and Roger Graeve, Jr. Houston Boothe, Cindy, Toni, Cheryl and Vickie, are the children of
Alva Glenn Jr. and Connie Klages Boothe.

James Allen and Marcella Reynolds Rose are the parents of Nanna Jean, Patti, Bobbie, James Jr. and Sandra Lee. Michael Thomas and David Joseph are the children of Betty and Tom Bigelbach.

The children of Bob and Dianna (Carpenter) Anderson are Jill Renee and Roger Raymond. Debbie and Cindy are the children of Donald and Barbara Vaughn Anderson. The children of Arla and Neal Lawson are Tami, Shawn and Christopher.

Fred and Muriel were great, great, grandparents to April, the daughter of Nanna Jean and Dan Morris, and to Dana Jean the daughter of Patti and Michael Griffith.

Fred Gustaf passed away at the age of 80 on June 16, 1956 and Muriel at the age of 90 years on March 19, 1969.
