Dr. C. B. Allen, of Morning Sun, died suddenly on Wednesday, December 13, at 12 o'clock, after a brief illness. Dr. Charles Barton Allen, M. D., was the son of James Powers Allen and Martha J. Stone Allen, and was born in Antrim, Guernsey county, Ohio, Nov. 20, 1850. When Charles B. Allen was but twenty months old, his mother died and he and his older brother, W. S. Allen, were taken to the home of their material grandfather, William Stone, at Uniontown, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, where they were brought up as members of the family, enjoying all the benefits of a good Christian home and lacking only a mother's care. Charles B. Allen attended the public schools of Uniontown during his boyhood and at the age of eighteen years entered Dunlap's academy in Merrilltown, Fayette county. He made satisfactory progress there and was soon prepared to enter upon more advanced studies at the university.

He taught school for a time and then went to the University of Virginia, where he took on optional course. He did not graduate, but when his work there closed the educational foundation was broad and solid and served as a substantial basis for the professional training to follow. After quitting the university he engaged in teaching and other occupations to provide means for further education. This continued until 1873, when he registered as a student in the office of Dr. J. B. Ewing, of Uniontown, and began the study of medicine, his chosen profession. He soon entered the medical department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and completed the course. Returning to Uniontown he entered in the practice of his profession, but after a year's practice there, he concluded to try his fortunes in the great west.

Accordingly he arrived in Iowa in April, 1877, and entered into partnership with his brother, Dr. W. S. Allen, at Cairo, Louisa county They practiced together until 1883 when Dr. W. S. Allen removed to Morning Sun, where he died three years later, in 1886. Dr. C. B. Allen then came to Morning Sun, where he has since been engaged in continuous practice of his profession. Dr. Allen was married June 19, 1882 to Miss Clara Weaver and four children were born to them. Jesse, the eldest boy, having passed away. Mrs. Miles T. Babb and Will Stone Allen, of Kansas City, Mo., and Harry Don of Morning Sun, together with the wife survive him. The funeral services were held from the home Friday, December 15, at 2 p. m., conducted by Rev. A. E. Cameron, assisted by Rev. Geo. Blagg. Interment was made in Elmwood cemetery.
