Page 3Letts Record: On Saturday, Nov. 25, 1911 at a little after 11 o'clock a. m., John Coder passed away at his farm home north of Cranston after, a lingering illness of several month's duration. He was at the time of his death 70 years, 10 months and 4 days old having been born in Bainbridge, Ross county, Ohio, Jan. 21st, 1841. On February 21st, 1867, he was united in marriage to Eliza J. Fry, who still survives him. To this union was born two sons and four daughters, Chester N. Coder, of Cranston; W. H. Coder, of Ottumwa, Mrs. Lillie Hackett, of Letts and Mrs. Roy Welsch, of Cairo, Iowa and Mrs. Ella Snyder, who died April 11th of this year. He also leaves four brothers and two sisters- F. M. Coder, of Leon; L. G. Coder, of Lake township and C. E. and N. G. Coder of Letts and Mrs. Sarah Idle and Mrs. Allie Van Horn, of Letts.
Mr. Coder was a soldier. In 1862 he responded of his country's call for help and became a member of Co. H., 91st, Ohio. Volunteers and served throughout the war. July 5th, 1865, he came to Iowa and settled in Muscatine county, where he lived a busy useful life. The funeral was held Monday afternoon, at the Oak Grove Christian church near Cranston, and was conducted by Rev. R. Boyce who delivered a very able and truthful sermon on the every day life of a very good and highly respected citizen. The remains were interred in the Oak Grove cemetery.
