Lucia Maria Nichols Bates, daughter of Leslie and Avonia Nichols, was born February 28, 1873 and died at 8:30 a. m. Friday morning, May 5, 1911. She was united in marriage to Howard T. Bates, March 2, 1892. To this union was born six children, namely Lela M., Jennie R., Hazel M., Marian M., Harold H., and Donald R., the latter only one year old. Lucia Nichols gave herself to her Master, uniting with the Oakland Presbyterian church, April 7, 1889. She was born on the farm where she and he husband have always made their home. Lucia Bates was a woman of many beautiful Christian graces, a kind wife and an ideal mother. She will be missed by a wife circle of acquaintances. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband and six children, her father, with whom she shared her home, and one sister, Mrs. Angie M. Bates, of Wapello. Funeral services were held at the Oakland Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. E. A. Cameron.
