The announcement Sunday noon that little Joe Gauss was dead sent a pang of deepest sorrow through the hearts of many Wapello people outside the immediate household and relatives. Especially will he be missed by those who had tenderly cared for and watched over him with unselfish devotion since the death of his mother, which occurred on his second birthday. Everyone in Wapello knew and loved little Joe. He was a manly, bright, attractive, lovable little fellow, whose childish acts and words endeared him to all he came in contact with. Although the center of attraction in the home he was not a spoiled child.

Joseph James Gauss, son of the deceased Paul I. and Anna H. Gauss, was born in Shenandoah, Iowa, Jan. 13, 1902 and died at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. M. G. Hurley, in Wapello, Ia., Sunday Aug. 25, 1907, at 11 :30 a. m. His mother died when he was two years old and the father passed away one year and two months later. He is survived by his sister, Hurley and brother, Raymond, who were present when he died. The sickness which terminated in his death was of short duration, though he had not been feeling very well for a few days. The funeral services were held from the home Tuesday forenoon at ten o'clock, conducted by Rev. Newsom, and amid a myriad of beautiful flowers the little body was laid to rest beside father and mother in the Wapello cemetery.
