Page 1(Muscatine) James M. Sweeney, an old resident of Muscatine, died at the home of his daughter in that place Monday. The cause of his death was pneumonia, which disease he contracted about 10 days ago. It was not thought that his condition was serious until last Saturday, however, and the announcement came as a shock to his many friends. Mr. Sweeney had lived in Muscatine for the past 32 years and during that time he had been an upright Christian, a good citizen and a noble man. He was well known and while he did not take active part in the business of the city, he won many friends by his good will and charitable deeds. He was a faithful attendant at the First Presbyterian church, having joined that denomination while in his youth.
The deceased was born in Wayne county, Ind., on February 25, 1824, and came to Muscatine more that 30 years ago. His wife preceded him in death several years ago, and since that time he had resided with his granddaughter, Mrs. Chas. Dunham. He is survived by three brothers and one sister, J. L. Sweeney, of Wapello, D. M. Sweeney, of Davenport; George Sweeney, of Osceola and Jane Chaudoin, of Muscatine, and one granddaughter, Mrs. Charles Dunham. The funeral was held from the home, 527 Mulberry street, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
