W. D. Berryhill a well known citizen of Jefferson township, died suddenly last Saturday morning at an advanced age. He was born at Harrisburg, Pa., April 4, 1824, and was therefore almost 83 years old at the time of his death. He came to Iowa, locating in Iowa city, about the year 1851, where he continued to reside until 1881, when he came to Louisa county locating over the river. He was married in 1853 to Miss Anna De Tul Gay of Harrisburg, Pa, to whom ten children were born, seven of whom are living: Mrs. John James, Des Moines; Will Berryhill, Ft. Collins, Colo., Andrew, the eldest, somewhere in Nevada; Mrs. A. B. Hook, of Toolesboro, at whose home he died, Mrs. Wm. Beck, of Morning Sun, Hasting and Frank, residing over the river. His wife died in 1877.

Mr. Berryhill was something of a recluse, living alone on his little fruit farm most of the time, spending some time, as the notion took him, with his daughter, Mrs. Hook, who cared for him during his last sickness, which was almost his first, he having been remarkably free from bodily ills. He was taken some weeks ago with the prevailing grippe, which ran into pleurisy, affecting the heart action. His death was without warning, thought not wholly unexpected. The remains were taken to Iowa City Monday and buried in Oakland cemetery by the side of his wife, who had been dead thirty years.

Mr. Berryhill was a man of quick intelligence and of somewhat eccentric ways, but was respected by those who knew him best. He belonged to a family once prominent in the affairs of the county. His nephew, Hon. Jas. G. Berryhill, is a man of influence in the capital of the state.
