Page 1Mrs. Harrison Smice, who has been a great sufferer from a tumorous growth for several months, was taken to the hospital in Iowa City Monday morning, where she was operated on Tuesday morning, but never rallied. The remains were brought home on the evening train. Her maiden name was Martha Hilly. She was born in Jersey county, Ill., March 13, 1848 and died Feb. 26, 1907, aged 58 years, 11 months and 13 days. She was first married to Jacob Hoffman in Jersey county, Ill., to which union three children were born, George Hoffman, of Butte, Montana, and two daughters, Mrs. E. J. Wheeler, of St. Joseph, Mo., and Mrs. Clara Allison of Marion, Ind. There are five grandchildren.
The family moved from Illinois in 1869 to Carroll county, Mo. From there they removed in 1877 to Pittsburg, Kansas, where her husband died Dec. 8, 1892. She was again married to H. H. Smice June 27, 1894, at Columbus Junction with whom she lived in this place until her death. She, with her parents and first husband, united with the Christian church during her young womanhood. During the years of her failing health and until the end, in the midst of intense suffering, she was patient, hopeful, cheerful and christian in her trust. She was a kind and devoted mother to her children, a faithful wife and beloved neighbor. The funeral was held at the home at 2 o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. E. Newsom, with interment in the Wapello cemetery.
