Sarah, the third child and youngest daughter of Grandfather Philip Minehart, was born in Basil, Fairfield County, Ohio, March 27, 1824. She was united in marriage on the 12th day of January 1845, to Jonathan Smith and the couple made their home at Winchester just across the line in Franklin County, Central Ohio. Six children were born to this union before the family came to Iowa. They were: Hinton, John Jonathan, William Henry, George W., and Minerva Jane. In 1855, they came to the Hawkeye State and settled section six Buffalo Township, Linn County. The elder Smith made many improvements on his farm prior to his death on February 14, 1899 at the age of seventy four years, eleven months and eighteen days.
