The obituary is hard to read, easily could be 1843 and not 1848. Married ELlen Foster in 1870, she died 1871, Married Angeline Whitten 1874 she died 1889, Married Eliza Whitten 1895 and she survived him. Obits are not always absolutely correct, I can only tell you what it says. Eliza's says she was born in Madison, Indiana in 1848. I can check for an obit for Velmer if you want.
