The Anamosa Eureka, Anamosa, Iowa, Friday, March 28th, 1862
List of the Killed and Wounded in Companies “B” and “D,” Fifth Iowa Regiment, at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Ark.
Our boys in the Iowa Ninth gave a good account of themselves in the battle of Pea Ridge. One letter writer, not connected with the regiment, says “the 4th and 9th Iowa fought like tigers.” And while we sorrow over the death of five men in Harper’s Company, we rejoice that the number was not greater. Let their names be remembered for they died in a holy cause. They are Sergeant Alfred A. Hines and Private E. A. Smith, of Bowen’s Prairie and George P. Howard of Clay Tp. John V. Osborn of Carpenter’s Company was wounded in the head, and is reported missing. We shall soon learn more of him. James B. Schull, of Harper’s Company was killed by the accidental explosion of a shell. Osborn was from Madison and Schull from Richland Township. The total of killed and wounded in the two companied was-Carpenter:-none killed, five wounded in Harper’s, five killed and thirty-two wounded.
