Atty. P. A. Korab Dies Here At Age of 87; Funeral Rites Will be Tuesday Afternoon
P. A. Korab, 87, Iowa City attorney, died at his home at 729 North Van Buren Street at 5 p.m. Sunday.
Paul Albert Korab was born in Linn County on July 30, 1857, the son of Paul and Katherine Korab. As a young boy he moved with his parents to a farm in Jefferson township, Johnson County, and in 1884 he moved to Iowa City where he continued to live until his death.
Mr. Korab married Mary A. Dobrovsky in April 1886 and she died on September 12, 1912.
Before coming to Iowa City, Mr. Korab was graduated from Western college and also had taught in country schools in Johnson County for several years. In Iowa City, he attended the University of Iowa and graduated from the college of law in 1893.While still attending the university, he became deputy clerk of the district court of Johnson County and later became clerk, which office he held until 1897.
After leaving the clerk’s office, Mr. Korab became the cashier of the Iowa State bank and later president of the Iowa City Savings bank. Upon retiring from the bank, he entered law practice and for the past 10 years or more he has maintained a law office in Iowa City with his son, E. P. Korab.
Mr. Korab was a member of the Iowa City board of education for several terms; served as a member of the local library board and as a member of the first Iowa City Park board at the time the present park was selected and purchased. As a member of the Iowa Banker’s association, he acted as secretary of group 13 of that association for many years. Mr. Korab held a life membership in the State Historical society and was one of the original members of the Old Settler’s association.
He was one of the founders of the Bohemian National Council of Higher Education, and served as national secretary of that group for 15 years. He became president of the Iowa City branch of the Czech-American National alliance at the time of its organization, prior to the entrance of the United States in the present World War.During the time of the first World War, he was an officer of the local Bohemian American Red Cross. He was a member of the Johnson County Bar association and of Lodge P. J. Safarik, C.S.A. for more than 50 years, receiving his 50-year jewel from that lodge more than two years ago. He was president of the latter group for several years.
Surviving Mr. Korab are his son, Atty. E. P. Korab of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Mrs. Robert E. Rose of San Pablo, Calif., T/5 Edward William Korab of the U.S. army signal corps, now enroute to the far east, and June Korab of Iowa City; and two great grandchildren, Carolyn and Marion Rose of California.
Funeral services will be held at the Beckman funeral home Tuesday and burial will be in Oakland cemetery. T. B. Hlubescek of Cedar Rapids and the Rev. James E. Waery will officiate. (Source: Iowa City Press-Citizen, Mon., Feb. 26, 1945, pg. 2)
