Remember When . . . May 2011
Sharon Center United Methodist Church
JubileeJubilee was a singing group comprised of young women who attended the Sharon Center United Methodist Church. The original group consisted of Barbara Schrock (alto), Kerilee Schrock (soprano), Janet Lackender (soprano), and Mary Roberts (alto). In later years Janet moved away and Jeanette Shaffer, Karen Shaffer, Dawn Miller and Cathann Arceneaux sang with the group. Mary Roberts was the groups' pianist. Sometimes a tambourine was used and Cathann Arceneaux played the short ribs (really).
At the time that Jubilee was active these young women were upper high school class men and or in the early college years of their lives. Jubilee sang in the late 1970 or early 1980's and continued into the 1990's. They sang contemporary gospel music. Some of the artist that they borrowed songs from were, Honey Tree, The Gather Family and Evie. Jubilee began in response to the desire of these young women to sing more contemporary music in church. The only other opportunity in a small country church was the adult choir. The adult choir at Sharon Center United Methodist Church was a fine group, but it was populated by the parental generation of these women and chose to sing music of their era. This was around the time when the popular culture was talking about the "Generation Gap". I suppose Jubilee was in some small part an attempt to bridge that "Gap". In truth most of the congregation appreciated the groups' contribution to the worship service. They sang in church on a regular basis. The biggest venue that this group sang for was the Denny Frarie Channel 9 Morning Show. No one can recall what year that was, but it was probably in the early 1990's.
All of the members of Jubilee were friends and did things together outside the official church setting. The members parents were friends too and all of the members of this groups families were knitted together in faith, friendship and community. That holds true today all these years later. The members now do not all live in this community but remain friends and are always happy to learn about the others lives as they cross from time to time.
