JohnstonCarolyn Jean HESTON, 85, passed away December 15, 2024. She was born December 26, 1938. Services will be held Thursday, December 26, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Greater Des Moines, 8250 NW 62nd Avenue in Johnston. Family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with memorial service at 11:00 a.m. In addition to this, a Celebration of Life will take place in Fairfield, Iowa in the spring. *Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s) mentioned.Note: From her obituary at Hamilton Funeral Home's website, Carolyn was first married in 1957 to Robert Wayne SALTS, and they had four daughters. Robert passed away in 1965 and she subsequently married Kenneth Bruce HESTON, adding three more children to her family. She was a secretary to an elementary school superintendent, worked in the daycare at her church, and later started her own home daycare. She also worked at Parkview Care Center and Louden Crane and Monorail. Being active in her church, she loved helping the elderly and others in need, was involved in 4-H, and was handy with arts and crafts. An excellent seamstress, she made costumes for her children and others in Kids Day parades, Easter dresses and bridesmaid dresses, a wedding dress for a niece, and did sewing for friends and relatives. She was also a wonderful artist, making posters for the DAR Kiwanis Kids Day Celebration, and painting sceneries from her travels around the state. In 1982 she received her Nursing degree, working at Jefferson County Hospital and then as a traveling nurse in Arizona before returning to Iowa in 1990. She and Kenneth then settled in Des Moines and she worked at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, retiring in 2001. Survivors include husband Kenneth, children Sheryl, Kathy, Roxanne, Kim, and Kevin; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a sister Nancy; sister-in-law Sandy; son-in-law Doug; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Preceding her were her parents, Theodore and Wilma (MANNING) CASSABAUM; brother Richard; first husband Robert; two daughters Barbara and Phyllis; son-in-law Michael; grandson Dustin; two great-grandsons; 10 brothers-in-law; eight sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. Donations in lieu of flowers to the Parkinson's Foundation in Carolyn's memory.
