Raised during the grips of the Great Depression, Harold’s stoic personality was matched only by his gentle demeanor and lightning-fast wit. Born July 2, 1927, in Marengo, Iowa, Harold along with his parents Charles and Anna (Reed) Mitchell, and his two sisters, Gerry and Norma, moved to the southwest side of Cedar Rapids during his teen years.
Harold’s devotion to his wife, Joyce (Jones) Mitchell, of over 50 years was surpassed by none and served as an example of love to all those who knew them. Harold is survived by his son, Jeff Mitchell and partner Barb Hagstrand, his four accomplished grandchildren, Justin (Megan), James (Mel), Julie and Jonathan (Natalia), along with eight budding great-grandchildren, Jozlynn, Jaxon, Jase, Landyn, Lauryn, Solomon, Julius and Joyce.
Harold was a man that exemplified commitment. He spent over 40 years developing a career at Chandler Company, later known as Plumb Supply. He is best remembered for always putting family first, never turning down opportunities to have dinners and picnics with his family, attending their basketball, soccer, baseball games, auto races and much more. He always stood steadfast buttressed by his independent nature while always respecting others. Harold never asked anything for himself, but instead took every opportunity to help and support those he loved. He took pride in living independently for 24-years taking pleasure in mowing his lawn, shoveling snow, doing his own shopping and taking daily walks until his recent fall.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Anna Mitchell; wife, Joyce; two sisters and their husbands, Gerry and Bob Moneypenny, and Norma and Bill Sanchez; and daughter-in-law, Jan (Fuhrmeister) Mitchell.
All who knew Harold were graced by his 97 years of life.
