Harriett Lucille Nielsen, age 91, of Ida Grove, Iowa, formerly of Mapleton passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at the Horn Memorial Hospital Ida Grove, Iowa. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2019, at the Mount Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek, Iowa. Reverend Kevin J. Freese will officiate. The Christensen -Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove and Battle Creek, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Harriett Lucille was born January 23, 1928 at Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of Orrashia (Racy) and Lillian (Muckey) Zediker. She graduated from Mapleton High School in 1944.
Harriett and Chris Nielsen were united in marriage on February 19, 1950 in Sioux City, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union, Mark Christian and Terry Craig. The couple moved to a farm south of Battle Creek, Iowa and later remained in the Mapleton area until entering the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove. Chris passed away September 17, 2009.
Harriett was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Mapleton. She was a past member of the Castana Community Church in Castana, Iowa and the Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, Iowa. Harriett was also a member of the quilting circle at the Methodist Church. Some of the things she enjoyed were baking, quilting, crocheting, flower/vegetable gardening and attending local athletic events. Harriett treasured time spent with her two grandchildren, Jenna and Craig; and valued the moments spent with all her nieces and nephews. Survivors include two sons, Mark Nielsen of Battle Creek, IA, Terry Nielsen and his wife Becky, Mapleton, IA; two grandchildren, Jenna Nielsen, Council Bluffs and Craig Nielsen, Omaha; and numerous nieces and nephews. Harriett was preceded in death by her parents, husband Chris Nielsen; sisters Delberta (Ross) Hart, Shirley (Len) Koenigs, and Caryl (Paul) Smith; brothers Maurice (Wanda) Zediker, John (Dorothy) Zediker, and Jim Zediker.
