Thomas “Tom” George, age 47, of Cresco, IA passed away on December 11, 2024 at Regional Health Services of Howard County.
Thomas Arlis George was born August 31, 1977 to Sue and Jerry George of rural Lime Springs, IA. Tom attended elementary school in Lime Springs. He told his mother, who taught second grade in Lime Springs, that second grade was his favorite. He played summer softball with the Lime Springs team as a child. In high school Tom played baseball, and he was a shot putter in track and field. As he got older his favorite sport was football, playing football in high school. But Tom’s passion was always music. He learned to play guitar throughout high school at Kepharts in Decorah, IA. After graduating high school, he continued to pursue a career in music. He studied music at Music Tech in MPLS. Over the years Tom played in many bands with many musicians who became great friends. His love of music transferred to his life’s career. Tom managed many different music stores in Wisconsin and Minnesota. His knowledge of the music industry, enthusiasm and willingness to make personal connections made him excel in his business pursuits. Finally, he decided his true calling was in promoting bands worldwide.
Tom moved back to Cresco to get his Public Relations business started in 2008. At that time he reconnected with Tracy Mohrhauser, an old friend, fell in love, and they were married on July 7, 2012. They lived in Iowa City for a time where Tracy was employed in retail management while Tom worked at home promoting bands and cared for their newborn child, Colette. They chose to move back to Cresco to allow Colette to grow up near their families later in 2012. Upon returning, Tom and Tracy worked together promoting musicians and bands for outside companies before forming TAG Publicity, together, in 2015. They continued to work together and build their company with family, employing staff across the country and promoting such major bands and artists as NEAL SCHON (JOURNEY), Static-X, FOZZY, LORDS OF ACID, DOPE, and many more, though Tom’s passion remained on elevating new artists and bands. He was renowned for his unbridled enthusiasm and intense work ethic, and his passing was a deep blow to the independent music community. As social media was such an integral component of his business, the thousands of tributes posted across social media in the wake of his passing are testament to his years of unequalled passion and dedication.
Tom was diagnosed with CNS Lymphoma in 2020, during the height of the pandemic. Despite having to be life flighted to Iowa City and suffering repeated medical emergencies throughout the following year, he survived far beyond expectations, with his last MRI showing no abnormal tissue development since August 2021.
If you were blessed to know Tom, you’ll remember his infectious smile, signature laugh and endless enthusiasm. His passion for music, movies and Minnesota sports sparked countless conversations, and his gentle, humble spirit brought joy to everyone he met. Tom’s legacy lives on in the music he championed, the relationships he cherished, and the unwavering love he shared with his family. He will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
Tom is survived by his wife Tracy; their daughter Colette; his stepson Armand; his parents, Jerry and Sue George; his sister Angie Chambers and her husband Ryan; and many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him dearly.
A small celebration of life will be held on Tom and Tracy’s wedding anniversary, July 7, 2025, for close friends and family.
