ConradRuth R. Miller, 90, of Conrad, Iowa, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at the Ivester Church of the Brethren, in rural Grundy Center, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday December 20, 2011, at the Johnson Funeral Home, in Conrad. Interment will be at Conrad Cemetery.
Ruth was born January 10, 1921, to J.O. and Mable (Mann) Smith, north of Clemons, Iowa. She attended Bangor Friends Church and Liberty Consolidated School until 1930. She moved with her parents to farm near Whitten, Iowa. Along with her family she joined the Ivester Church of the Brethren.
Ruth graduated from Whitten High School in 1939. She entered nurses training at Evangelical Deaconess Hospital graduating with a RN degree in May of 1942. She worked as a private duty nurse until 1943 and then joined the United States Army Nurse Corp. Ruth served three years in the U.S. and Europe. During World War II Ruth served in the 110th Evacuation Hospital under General George Patten.
Ruth was united in marriage to Jay L. Miller in May of 1947 at her parent's home. She worked part time at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital while her daughters were in school. In 1956, they moved north of Conrad and engaged in farming with her father. Ruth was a member of the Ivester Church of the Brethren where she was a member of women's fellowship, taught bible school and Sunday school. She served on the Grundy County Cancer Board and volunteered with both the Grundy and Marshall County Hospice. Ruth was also a member of Conrad American Legion Auxillary. Ruth collected a lifetime worth of friends and enjoyed keeping in contact with them through her annual Christmas letter. Entertaining friends, neighbors, and former Army nurse friends was a joy to her.
Ruth will be missed by her daughters, Ann (Mark) Thompson of Conrad, Kathy (Gary) Smith of Tucson, Arizona, Beth (Dave) Jackley of Beaman, seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary DeWitt, Indianola, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay.
