Little is known about Mr. Whitney, who came from Maine to Rockford in 1858. He had a bursery in the 1860s and for the most of his life operatied a furniture business in A. L. Bristol's former store (later Commercial Hotel and present site of C. W. Graper's station). Around the turn of the century he and his family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mr. Whitney is remembered especially for the great number of homes and store buildings he built in early Rockford.
