DEATH NOTICE:

SCHAFFER, Donald Orr, 89, died April 16, 2006 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Indianola, Iowa. Funeral services were held April 18 at the Kale Funeral Home in Osceola with Rev. Neville Clayton officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola.
Memorial may be made to the Osceola American legion or Hospice of Central Iowa.

DONALD ORR (Don) Schaffer ... Donald Orr Schaffer, son of Lloyd Franklin and Ethel Chloe Orr Schaffer was born July 16, 1916 in Clarke County, Iowa and passed to his eternal reward April 15, 2006 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Indianola, Iowa. He was eighty-nine years of age.
Don received his education in rural Iowa and Illinois schools. He served two years in the Civilian Conservation Camp in his early years. On June 7, 1941 Don was united in marriage to Opal Marie Horton in Princeton, Missouri. They became the parents of two daughters, Karen Marie and Karyl Ann. Don and Opal were devoted to each other for the next 65 years.
Don farmed during the earlier years and worked heavy construction. He spent the last 27 1/2 years of his career working for the Clarke County maintenance Department as a patrol operator and truck driver.
In his spare time, Don enjoyed bowling, shooting pool (especially Snooker) and fishing. He was an avid card and board game player and was quite competitive. He also enjoyed building many grandfather clocks over the years. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in early years and was also a member of the Clarke County Fishing Club and various bowling leagues.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Burl and wife Opal B. Schaffer and Kenneth Schaffer; sisters, Marian Mericle and husband Bob and Vivian Hanson and husband Wayne.
He is survived by his wife, Opal M. Schaffer of Osceola; daughters, Karen Stickler, and husband Roger of Overland Park, KS and Karyl Hartzler and husband Roger of Ft. Dodge; five grandchildren: Jan Lynn Stickler and wife Kyong of Federal Way, WA; Dawn Rene Stickler of Aurora, Co; Heather Marie Steele and husband Tom of Fontana, CA; Shane Leroy Hartzler and wife Jenny of Marion, IA: Chad Evart Hartzler of Thorton, CO; 13 great grandchildren; brothers, Norman Schaffer of Crossville, TN and Robert Schaffer and wife Dorothy of Woodridge, IL; sister-in-law, Doris Schaffer of Manchester TN as well as many other relatives and a host of friends.
All who knew Don will remember his as a man of upstanding character. He will always be held in high regard for his integrity, friendship, wisdom, tenacity, faith, and a great sense of humor. he enjoyed a long, full life with family and friends.
