Washta, Iowa – H. Glen Klingensmith, curator of the Grand Meadow Heritage Center, died Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla., after a brief illness. He was 76.

Mr. Klingensmith was instrumental in founding the Grand Meadow Heritage Center and had served as president the last seven years.

Mr. Klingensmith was born April 19, 1905, Grand Meadow Township. He attended Grand Meadow School which he later served as an instructor and superintendent. Upon graduation from Morningside College, he married Vera Robertson on Aug. 12, 1926, at Worthington, Minn.

Mr. Klingensmith also had held teaching positions at Pierson, Iowa, at Air Force installations in Sioux Falls, S.D., during World War II and at Carleton College at Northfield, Minn.

He also was engaged in farming in the Washta area before joining the Honeywell Corp. in Minneapolis, Minn. He was employed as an engineer in Honeywell’s testing department and worked on the Apollo space mission until he retired in 1970.

He retired to Grand Meadow Township where he became interested in the historical preservation of the area. He was a member of Meadow Star Church, the Cherokee Historical Society, the Kingsley Historical Society, the Kingsley Historical Society, Rutland Lodge 607, AF&AM, at Pierson, and the Consistory and Abu Bekr Shrine Temple in Sioux City.

Survivors include his wife; six sons, David of Pierson, Richard of Denver, Colo., Roger and Dan, both of Minneapolis, Joel of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Michael of New York City; four daughters, Ruth Hastings of Tucson, Ariz., Kay Metcalf of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Joan Oberdeck of Jacksonville and Marilyn Dorwait of Delray Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Dale and Rex, both of Washta; 28 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established in Mr. Klingensmith’s name at the Grand Meadow Heritage Center.

Memorial services are pending after the return of the immediate family. The remains were cremated.
(Note: It was later reported Glen’s memorial service was held May 8 in the Meadow Star United Methodist Church, rural Washta.)
