Joseph A. Thomas, 41, of Independence, IA, died on February 16, 2025, at Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA.
Joseph was born on July 2, 1983, in Independence, IA, the son of Arthur D. and Patricia A. (Summers) Thomas. He spent the first five years of his life in the pediatrics unit at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, WI. When he left the hospital the Thomas family lived throughout the United States. In 1996, the Thomas family settled in Independence, IA. Joseph attended River Hills in Cedar Falls, IA and graduated in 2004.
Joseph loved spending time with his family and friends. They made many memories traveling, going to museums, and dancing.
He is survived by his mother, Patricia Kuykendall, Independence, IA, his siblings, Shannon (Tracy) Summers, Manchester, IA, Kimberly (David) Coffelt, Oelwein, IA, Kristin (Tim) Cates, Buffalo, WY, David (Wanda) Thomas, Albert Lea, MN, and Marvin Thomas, Independence, IA, his uncles; Carl Summers, Independence, IA, Roger Thomas, Murfreesboro, AR, Wendell (Angela)Thomas, Mena, AR, his Aunts; Marvella (David) Barbre, Dericks, AR, Martha (Mickey) McCauley, Murfreesboro, AR, Lois Butters, Independence, IA, many nieces and nephews, and his dog, Lola.
Joe is preceded in death by his stepfather, Larry Kuykendall, his father, Arthur Thomas, a sister, Debra Thomas, three aunts, Marilyn Summers, Laura Thomas, and Mary Thomas, and two uncles, Terry Thomas, and Butch Butters, his maternal grandparents, Harry and Marie Summers, and his paternal grandmother, Gussie Hughitt.
A Funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. Burial will be held at Floral Hill Memorial Garden in Hazleton, IA. Visitation will be held from 9 AM until the service on Friday.
The Thomas family would like to thank the Buchanan Health Center, Cedar Valley Hospice, Andrew Meany from Onboard, Brandon Koepke from Cozy Van, North Star Community Services. A Special thank you to Dr. Duane Jasper for taking care of Joey for thirty years. The Reiff Family Center for their help with the funeral services. And most of all our family and friends, for their love and support.
