Betty J. Osvald, 81, of Independence, IA, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living Center in Independence, IA.
Betty was born on February 12, 1943, in Waterloo, IA the daughter of Raymond L. and Loretta M. (Farmer) Strempke. She grew up in rural Independence, IA, and attended the Independence Community Schools. On May 9, 1959, Betty married Joe A. Osvald Jr. at St. Johns Catholic Church in Independence.
They made their home together on a farm, where she wasn’t afraid to go out and help with the farm chores and get dirty. She helped Joe milk their cows and loved every aspect of farming, and caring for livestock. Betty promoted 4-H and was a leader for many years.
Betty and Joe enjoyed going to the stock car races and often brought their kids with them. She was passionate about cheering on her favorite drivers, and her husband Joe during races for many years.
She loved raising her children and later helping her grandchildren raise her great-grandchildren. She enjoyed watching them show animals every summer at the county fairs. Betty also enjoyed cooking and feeding her grandchildren. They were often treated to Cinnamon rolls, sugar cookies, and other goodies when they visited. She also was never shy to brag about her grandchildren to anyone she met.
Betty liked caring for children; for over fifteen years, she worked at Kidsville in Independence. Making sure all the babies were well taken care of.
She is survived by her children, Janet (James) McLaren and Martin Osvald, both of Independence, IA; five grandchildren, Bonnie (Marty) Krogmann, Amanda (Mark) Boyer, Heather (Dan)Thompson, Becky (Matt) Rea, and Dustin (Holli) Osvald; seventeen great-grandchildren; a sister, Sherry (Dave) Hall; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe Osvald, a brother, Russell Strempke, and two sisters, Shirley Morris and Beverly Wroten.
Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 7 PM on Sunday, November 24th, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA.
A Parish Vigil service will be held at 7 PM on Sunday. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the funeral home, with Very Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will be held at St. John’s Cemetery.
