MR. AND MRS. J. D. BARNEVELT MARRIED 50 YEARS AGO IN PELLA
Came Here 40 Years Ago - Mr. Barnevelt Nearly 19 and Wife 17 When They Were Wed

Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Barnevelt, for 40 years residents of Madrid, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday. The anniversary really fell on Saturday, but some of the grandchildren could not be present then and the celebration was accordingly held the following day. Because of the ill health of Mrs. Barnevelt only the children and their immediate families were guests. Friends called throughout the day and extended their congratulations and best wishes.
One of the daughters and her family, Mrs. C. W. Snider of Branson, Mo., could not be present. The other daughters are Mrs. Adam Hoop of this city , and Mrs. Rena Godfrey of Des Moines. Dinner was enjoyed at noon, and the balance of the day was spent in receiving friends and enjoying the family associations.
Mr. and Mrs. Barnevelt were married in Pella, January 28th, 1878. They resided there until May of 1888 when they came to Madrid and Mr. Barnevelt opened a barber shop in a small frame building which stood where the Brown jewelry store now does. His shop remained there for about 3 1/2 years when he moved into the basement of the Madrid State Bank building and continued to operate the shop until he sold out to J. G. Pope about 1904. The shop is now owned by J. G. Day. Mr. Barnevelt has continued to work at his trade intermittently since then, however.
John was born May 22, 1859, in Pella, a son of D. Barnevelt. He learned the barber business during his youthful years and has made this his business practically all his life. After disposing of the business in 1904 they moved to a farm southwest of Madrid and farmed for a few years, but they soon returned to Madrid.
Mrs. Barnevelt was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Pope, and was born in Knoxville, Iowa, Jan. 11 1861. When she was young in years the family moved to Pella where she resided at the time of her marrieage.
To Mr. and Mrs. Barnevelt were born the three daughters mentioned above. The family circle has not been broken up to the present time, and the many friends of the family are hoping that it will remain so for many years.
Mr. and Mrs. Barnevelt believe in early marriages. Mrs. Barnevelt was 17 years of age, and Mr. Barnevelt no quite 19, when they were wed. They were asked Sunday if they would do it all over again just as they did, were their lives to be lived over, and both of them laughed and declared they would.
Mr. and Mrs. Barnevelt are spending the evening of their lives in a happy setting. They have a pleasant home on North Main street; one of their daughters resides here, and another is but a short distance away. Their friends of long standing surround them, and they are happy and contented. No one could reasonably ask for more.
