MILK QUENCHES FIRE
Waterloo, Oct. 14- Early Tuesday morning, a fire was discovered in the hay loft on the C. P. Rugg farm a few miles south of this city. A large barn and hog shed were burned to the ground. The barn was built last year at accost of $1,200. This could have been saved, but the fire had gained such headway when discovered that it was impossible to get to the windmill because of the intense heat. There were nine head of horses, seven calves and one cow burned to death. The only thing saved out of the barn were two head of horses. The corncrib was saved by throwing many gallons of milk on it.
It was thought the fire was caused by a “bum” who had taken refuge there for the night, as the stub of a railway tie book and a slough hat were found on the premises. It is thought, that the person who caused the fire will be caught, as all the rural lines have been notified. The total loss was about $3,000, covered by $2,000 insurance.
