Miss Murphy and Mr. Mullan Are Married at Noon

The wedding of Miss Helen Murphy, Vinton, and Alfred Mullan, Waterloo, solemnized at high noon today at the home of the bride’s brother, Edward A. Murphy, Vinton, is of interest here at Cedar Falls and Vinton. Dr. J. E. Johnson, former pastor of First M. E. church, in this city, officiated at the double ring service. Little Edward A. Murphy, Jr., the only attendant, bore the rings on a satin pillow. The bride, who was given to marriage by her brother, wore a gown of white chantilly lace and sunshine crepe.

Large baskets of gladioli decorated the rooms in which the small company of relatives and close friends was received for the ceremony. In the dining room [sic] where luncheon was served, tables were adorned with clusters of roses. Misses Emma Janet Ray, Dorothy Bickel, Catherine McElroy and Mary Brown served.

Mrs. C. W. Mullan, Waterloo, the groom’s mother, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hammond, Mr. and Mrs. Burr Lichty, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Reid and Paul Davis were present from Waterloo. Other guests from a distance were Mrs. F. Gertrude Eddy, Pasadena, Cal.; Mr. and Mrs. John Blair, Mr. and Mrs. John B. McDougal, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Stipp, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Walker, St. Clair, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mullan, Pomeroy; Dr. and Mrs. George Underwood, Cedar Falls; Dr. and Mrs. John M. Knapp, Boone; Mr. and Mrs. Milo R. Whippie, Cedar Rapids.

The bride, who is the daughter of the late Bernard Murphy and Mrs. Murphy, was born in Vinton, which, until recent years, had been her home. During the war she was in charge of liberty bond department [sic] of Central State bank, Des Moines, and for the last two years has been associated with her sister, Mrs. Louise M. Traer, in management of Bartlett hall diningrooms, Iowa State Teachers’ college. She completed the high school course at Vinton and was graduated from Ward-Belmont, Nashville, Tenn. Later she attended Drake conservatory, Des Moines.

Mr. Mullan is a son of the late Judge Charles W. Mullan and Mrs. Mullan, Waterloo. At present he is engaged in the practice of law. Excepting three years spent in United States forestry service in New Mexico, he has lived in this city. After graduation from west high school, he attended Grinnell college, from which he entered Iowa university, receiving his law degree in 1905. While at Iowa City he was affiliated with Sigma Nu fraternity. He is a member of military organizations local and national and is connected with several fraternal and civic bodies. In 1915 when the Plattsburg idea of officers’ training camps was promulgated, he attended the central division camp at Fort Sheridan, Ill., and at branch [sic] chairman of the Military Training Camps Association of United States, while the country was at war, was active in recruiting officers and men in all branches of service.

Mr. and Mrs. Mullan have planned their trip to include a lake cruise from Chicago to Port Arthur, Canada, and a voyage by canoe thru Canadian rivers and lakes to Nipigon Lodge on the shores of Lake Nipigon, where they will remain for a short outing. After Sept. 1, they will make Waterloo their home.
