Golden Wedding
Barclay Twp, Feb. 11, 1884

Editor Courier – We received a friendly invitation to be present at the celebration of the Golden Wedding of Mr. Hiram D. Buss and wife. Mr. Buss born Oct. 20, 1813, in the Kingdom of Hanover. Mr. Buss and lady were married Feb. 9th, 1834, in Einwalder, Hanover. They were married 10 years before they were blessed with children, then their son Edward was born; four years later, their daughter Ann was born, and three years later their son Durk was born. These three children constitute their family, and all are living yet. Their daughter Ann is Mrs. Kleckner, our neighbor. Edward and Durk have lived in Rooks Co., Kansas since 1878. Edward has seven children Ann has one, and Durk live; all these grand-children, except one of Edward’s children, are alive yet. Grandpa Buss was a sailor for twenty-seven years. He and his family emigrated to America in the spring of 1849, and came to Ogle Co., Ill., where they lived five years. Then, in 1854, they came to Barclay township, at that time an entire wilderness, but they stood all the hardships of pioneer life, always enjoying good health, and were, and still are, highly respected by all their friends and acquaintances, in the entire township.

When Mr. Buss settled in Section 12, there was no house from his place to Waterloo. In 1854 they had an Indian scare, some of the settlers fleeing eastward to save their lives and property, but our old friends stayed, and was not alarmed nor molested by the savages. The two old people are members of the Lutheran church; Mr. Buss is in politics a stalwart democrat, voting at every election that he is able to go to. There were on this occasion about 40 present; all wishing them another score of years. The company was composed of neighbors and friends. Our school board had their president, secretary and treasurer there, five sub-directors, three teachers, one of Poyner township trustees, three road supervisors, and in fact, a good looking set. The dinner and supper was splendid, and was prepared under the supervisor of Mrs. Ann Kleckner and Miss Kate Robinson, from Lester. We enjoyed ourselves at the table thoroughly. Grandpa and Grandma Buss are living with Charley Kleckner, and will stay with their daughter Ann as long as they live. We will close by thanking them for the honor of being one of the guests, and wish them many years yet.
