Audubon, IAEdward Burdette Kautzky, the son of Edward Francis and Bernice Louise Crellin, was born April 29, 1926, at his parents' home near Minburn, Iowa and died January 11, 2012 at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 85 years, 8 months, and twelve days.
Ed was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Perry, Iowa. He attended Washington Township School in Dallas County near Perry. He then graduated from St. Patrick's Parochial High School with the Class of 1944. In 1945 he enlisted in the United States Army. During his tour of duty he served as a Military Policeman in the Washington D.C. area. Ed was honorably discharged in 1949 and returned to the Perry area and helped operate the family farm.
On February 23, 1952, he was united in marriage to Doris Bauer at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Perry. Nine children were born to this union. They owned and operated farms south of Perry, Iowa then moved south of Glidden, Iowa and then in 1968 moved to a farm south of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They raised livestock and grew grain. In 1981 they retired from farming and moved into Audubon. Ed was employed as a foreman in the woodshop at Emmert Manufacturing and later with TCI. When TCI closed Ed worked various jobs in the Audubon area. Ed then was employed in the maintenance department at the Friendship Home in Audubon and later provided the wood crafts for the residents to decorate. In 1991 he started a mini storage business first located near their home and later they purchased the bowling alley and renovated the building for storage. He retired from the Friendship Home in 2000 but continued to volunteer at the home. He continued to operate the mini storage business and also helped his sons Dave and Joe farm during the spring and the fall until the fall of 2006 when his health started failing. He ran the mini storage business until he sold it in 2011. Ed continued to enjoy his woodworking.
Ed was member of the Audubon County Chamber of Commerce and was an eleven gallon blood donor. He enjoyed woodworking and working in his barn.
Preceding him in death were his son Matthew Kautzky; his parents; his son-in-law Jim Foster; his daughter-in-law Tammy Kautzky; his brother Frank Kautzky; and his sister Louise Alfers.
Survivors include his wife Doris Kautzky of Audubon, Iowa; his children: Dave and wife Sharon Kautzky of Bouton, Iowa; Joan Foster of Ankeny, Iowa; Bill and wife Valerie Kautzky of West Des Moines, Iowa; Tom and wife Peggy Kautzky of Princeville, Illinois; Ed Kautzky of Coon Rapids, Iowa; Joe and wife Sandy Kautzky of Templeton, Iowa; Jim Kautzky and fiancée Vickie of Fort Madison, Iowa; Kathi and husband Alfredo Rodriguez of Fallbrook, California; 26 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; his brother Don and wife Marlene Kautzky of Des Moines, Iowa; his brothers-in-law: Bernard and wife Karen Alfers of Neola, Iowa; Verne and wife LaVee Bauer of Paton, Iowa; his sister-in-law Eileen Kautzky of Wheaton, Illinois; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Service will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa at 3 p.m. Casket bearers will be his children: Dave Kautzky, Joan Foster, Bill Kautzky, Tom Kautzky, Ed Kautzky, Joe Kautzky, Jim Kautzky, and Kathi Rodriguez. The family will meet with friends Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
