Mixed Race Families

I'm looking for information about mixed race families in Appanoose County in mid 19th Century. I'm related to the Collins family, who came to area about 1845. They lived near the Hendrons, another mixed race family. Were there others in the County? How and why did they come to Appanoose County? Any info would be appreciated.
