Waukon friends were surprised and saddened Friday when news came of the death of Dr. N.N. Crawford at his home in Baltimore, Md., while his nurse was with him. Only last November he had enjoyed a several weeks visit with old time Waukon friends.
The remains arrived via Postville Saturday night accompanied by his brother-in-law, Mr. Edward Allanson, of Glenside, Pa.
Nathan Newell Crawford, son of the late Dr. J.C. Crawford and Flora Newell Crawford, was born at Waukon, Iowa, on Dec. 2, 1887, and died at his home at 3161 Ravenwood Ave., Baltimore, Md., on May 13, 1949, from an attack of coronary thrombosis following a period of several years of ill health.
As a youth he attended and graduated from Waukon high school in 2904. He then entered the Iowa State College of Agriculture at Ames, graduating in 1908, being awarded a degree in Veterinary Medicine. Following his graduation he practiced as a Veterinarian here in Waukon until he entered the Army at the beginning of the first World War in 1917, serving in the cavalry and being discharged in 1921 with the rank of Captain.
He then received an appointment to the Meat Inspection Service in the Department of Agriculture and was assigned to Baltimore, Md., where he was stationed practically all of the time until his retirement in 1943 because of physical disability, and continued to reside at his home in Baltimore until his death.
He died survived by two children, Catherine Crawford of Baltimore and Dr. Robert C. Crawford, of Roanoke, Virginia, who was a Lieut. Colonel in the Medical Corps of the Army in the late World War; two grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Glenn A. Steele, of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Mrs. Beth C. Allanson of Glenside, Penn., having preceded in death.
He was a member of the Masonic Order, having been affiliated with Waukon Lodge No. 154, A.F. & A.M. since 1910, and was also a life member of Ralph D. Waters Post No. 61, of the American Legion.
Services held at the funeral home of Martin Bros. in Waukon were in charge of Rev. A.H. Grosshein, of the First Presbyterian church of Waukon, followed by interment in Oakland Cemetery and full Masonic services at the grave in charge of Waukon Lodge No. 154, assisted by the members of Ralph D. Waters Post No. 62 of the American Legion.
The pallbearers were Messrs. I.E. Beeman, W.H. Niehaus, Henry Kosbau, Floyd Larson, M.H. Goede and Leon Henderson.
Attending from out of town were his sister, Mrs. Glenn A. Steele of Denver, Colo.; Mr. Ben Newell and Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Filiy and family, of Cedar Rapids Iowa; and Edward A. Allanson of Glenside, Penn.
