Samuel Gowdy Denison was born 3 May 1835, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Samuel was the son of William Denison (1804-?) and Eleanor Gowdy Denison (1811-1882). Samuel was a direct descendant of Captain George Denison (1618/20-1697) and Lady Ann Borodell (1615-1712). She was the daughter of Sir John Borodell and Ann Broughton, County Cork, Ireland.

Samuel married Martha Ann Spence probably in Allamakee County, Iowa about 1859. Martha was born about 1830 in Illinois. She was the daughter of John M. Spence (1789-1875) and Elizabeth Reed (1795-1870) natives of North Carolina, who settled in Allamakee County, before 1860.

Samuel was engaged in agriculture on his eighty-acre farm located in Union, Allamakee County. The family settled on a farm in Houston County, Minnesota before 1880. Samuel and Martha were the parents of four children all born in Iowa.
