Lois Patten, 91, of Orient passed away Monday, May 24th in hospice care at Greater Community Hospital, Creston, IA. There will be a Celebration of Life in Orient, in front of Mom and Dad's red barn at a later date, as well as a Celebration of Life for the family on Sunday, July 11th at her grandson Ryan's home in Pickering, MO. Burial will follow at Old Union Cemetery N.E. of Williamson. Memorials may be made to the family.
Lois, daughter of Merlin E. and Alice M. (Mathias) Hoskins, was born May 28, 1930, in Fontanelle. Lois graduated from high school on May 17, 1947. She attended teacher's college and taught school northwest of Fontanelle prior to her first marriage.
Lois (Hoskins) was married to Kermit Patten on October 4, 1956. Lois worked at Orient-Macksburg School for many years, but her favorite occupation was gardening, yardwork, quilting, farming, and raising animals. Lois, Kermit and their family moved to the Orient, Iowa area in 1960 and in 1969 purchased acreage at the edge of town. Lois's pride and joy was her home and their red barn.
Mom had an infectious laugh and beautiful smile. She had the patience to teach us to sew, to help with the farming, taught us the joy of baking, how to play basketball, and was always there to listen to us when we needed her. She wrote beautiful letters (in the smallest handwriting ever).
Survivors include her seven children: Ronald Wyllie, Hopkins MO., Roleene Roberts and husband, Reg, Algona, IA., Pamela Ridner, Algona, IA., Clarita Nelson and husband Wayne, Shannon City, IA. Patrick Patten and wife, Robin, Prescott, IA., Theresa Christensen, Arcadia, IA., Marcus Patten and wife Hollie, Orient, IA; brother Arthur (Mary Lou) Hoskins, Anita, IA., and sister Jean Cooper. Also surviving are 20 Grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her children, she also welcomed others into her home; such as Jody and Sheilia (Black) who spent several summers with us.
We will miss her greatly but have so many wonderful memories and of course, part of her is inside of all of us too. All our love to you mom.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Kermit, her parents, brother Lee Hoskins and wife Ruth, brother-in-law Dean Cooper, and her daughter-in-law, Teresa Patten.
